Systems Engineer (Hyper-V and VMware)
Summary
Systems engineer running Deltek's hybrid infrastructure: Windows and Linux servers on Hyper-V/VMware, SAN storage, and AWS/Azure clouds. Day to day is provisioning, monitoring, patching/hardening, backups and DR, plus automation with PowerShell, Python/Bash and IaC tools, tracked via ITSM/Jira workflows.
Key Responsibilities
Deploy, configure, maintain, and optimize Windows Server environments, including supported versions from Windows Server 2019 onward.
Administer and troubleshoot Windows and Linux servers, ensuring system availability, performance, security, and compliance with established standards.
Manage and support Hyper-V and VMware virtualization platforms, including virtual machine provisioning, resource allocation, cluster health, high availability, capacity planning, and migration.
Support virtualization automation and management platforms, including VMware Aria Automation (formerly vRealize Automation/VRA), where applicable.
Monitor and support SAN and enterprise storage platforms, including capacity management, performance monitoring, storage provisioning, and server/storage migration activities.
Administer and support public cloud environments in AWS and Microsoft Azure, including virtual compute resources, storage, networking, identity and access management, monitoring, backup, security, and cost optimization.
Support hybrid infrastructure operations by troubleshooting connectivity and dependencies between on-premises environments, colocation facilities, and public cloud platforms.
Develop, maintain, and improve scripts and automation workflows using PowerShell, Python, Bash, or other appropriate tools to reduce manual effort and improve operational consistency.
Identify opportunities to apply Infrastructure as Code (IaC), configuration management, and repeatable deployment practices using tools such as Jenkins, Terraform and Ansible.
Implement and maintain system hardening, security configurations, vulnerability remediation, patching, and compliance requirements in coordination with infrastructure and security teams.
Perform infrastructure monitoring, log analysis, performance tuning, incident investigation, and root-cause analysis to maintain service reliability.
Explore and implement AIOps and observability capabilities, including alert correlation, anomaly detection, trend analysis, predictive capacity monitoring, proactive identification of infrastructure risks, and self-healing.
Use Generative AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, or Microsoft Copilot, to assist with troubleshooting, scripting, documentation, knowledge discovery, and operational analysis, while validating outputs and following company security and data-handling policies.
Manage infrastructure work through Jira and established ITSM processes, including stories, incident, problem, change, request, task, backlog, and work-priority management.
Implement, test, and maintain backup and disaster recovery solutions, including recovery procedures and alignment with defined DR plan.
Support infrastructure lifecycle management, capacity forecasting, technology refreshes, platform migrations, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Maintain accurate technical documentation, standard operating procedures, operational runbooks, and knowledge articles.
Research, evaluate, and recommend infrastructure technologies and solutions that address operational challenges, strengthen security, improve resilience, or reduce cost.
Collaborate with infrastructure, cloud, security, application, network, and service management teams to resolve technical issues and deliver infrastructure improvements
