Why this role?
As a Systems Engineer, you'll have the opportunity to build, support and continuously improve Tesco IMS's AWS cloud platform, helping to provide secure, scalable and reliable cloud services that enable product teams to deliver value faster. You'll work alongside internal engineering teams and strategic technology partners to enhance an existing platform through automation, security, infrastructure as code and operational excellence.
This is an exciting opportunity to join Tesco IMS as we continue to strengthen our cloud engineering capabilities and evolve our AWS platform. The platform has already been established with support from a third-party partner, and we are looking for an engineer who can help us understand, improve and mature the environment while embedding engineering best practices across the organisation.
You will work on key initiatives including platform automation, infrastructure standardisation, cloud security improvements, networking enhancements, observability, and operational resilience. The role provides exposure to a broad range of AWS services and technologies while offering the opportunity to influence how cloud platforms are engineered and operated within Tesco IMS.
What makes this role particularly exciting is the opportunity to gain hands-on experience across a complex enterprise AWS estate, working closely with experienced cloud engineers, architects, security specialists and technology partners to deliver improvements that directly benefit engineering teams and customers.
What you’ll be doing
• Delivering secure, scalable and reliable AWS platform services that enable product teams to build and operate applications effectively.
• Improving platform consistency and deployment efficiency through Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and CloudFormation.
• Enhancing cloud security, identity management and governance controls across AWS environments, helping to maintain compliance and reduce risk.
• Strengthening platform reliability, monitoring and operational resilience through automation, observability and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Collaborating with internal teams and third-party suppliers to identify opportunities to optimise platform performance, security and cost efficiency.
• Contributing to the development of engineering standards, documentation, reusable patterns and best practices that improve the overall maturity of the platform.
What we’re looking for: (minimum criteria)
• Hands-on experience supporting and engineering AWS cloud environments, with a good understanding of core AWS services and platform operations.
• Experience using Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform and/or CloudFormation.
• Knowledge of AWS networking and security services, including VPCs, Route 53, Security Groups, IAM, KMS and Secrets Manager.
• Experience working with CI/CD pipelines, automation tooling and cloud-based operational support practices.
And if you have any of these, even better
• Experience working within multi-account AWS environments, AWS Landing Zones or AWS Control Tower.
• Knowledge of container technologies and services such as ECS, EKS or Kubernetes.
• Experience integrating AWS environments with Microsoft Entra ID and exposure to Azure services or Microsoft Fabric.
• Experience within regulated industries such as financial services, insurance or banking.
We welcome applications from everyone. If you’re excited about this role but your experience doesn’t align perfectly with every requirement, we’d still love to hear from you.
What’s in it for you
• A generous pension, with up to 7.5% employer contribution, depending on what you put in.
• Virtual GP Service for you and your family
• Performance related annual bonus.
• 7.2 weeks holiday, with the opportunity to buy more.
• Colleague Clubcard discount (10-15% + second card to share with someone else).
