Systems Engineer – Batteries & Electrical

Department: TEC Electrical & Battery

Experience Level: 3–5 Years

Location: Chennai, India

Position Type: Full-Time / New Role

About the Role

As a Systems Engineer within the Electrical & Battery Group, you will drive the systems-level development, requirement capture, and aircraft-level integration of our core energy storage and power conversion technologies. Instead of focusing on generic airframe wiring, you will own the systems engineering lifecycle for our high-voltage traction battery packs, Battery Management Systems (BMS HW/SW), high-voltage to low-voltage (HV/LV) DC-DC converters, and the Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS). You will act as the technical bridge ensuring these critical sub-systems seamlessly integrate, communicate, and achieve aerospace certification.

What You Will Do

  • Sub-System Integration: Define and own the interfaces, boundaries, and system behavior linking the physical Traction Battery Pack, BMS (Hardware & Software), HV/LV Converters, and BTMS to the wider eVTOL aircraft airframe.

  • Requirements Engineering: Capture, cascade, and track technical requirements from the aircraft level down to components, utilizing SAE ARP4754A guidelines to build out structured Verification Cross-Reference Matrices (VCRM).

  • Safety & Compliance Mapping: Coordinate functional safety assessments and hazard analyses (SAE ARP4761) specifically around battery thermal runaway, loss of BMS control, and converter power failures.

  • V&V Strategy: Design environmental and hardware verification plans targeting compliance with RTCA DO-160 and RTCA DO-254 for EWIS, Power distribution, Power conversion electronics and BMS & BTMS controllers.

  • Interface & Communication Control: Define and maintain data-bus communications (CAN, CAN-FD, or aerospace equivalents) and electrical grounding architectures to mitigate EMI/EMC issues between high-power traction lines and low-voltage control systems.

What We Are Looking For (Must-Haves)

  • Experience: 3 to 5 years of systems engineering or multidisciplinary design experience focused on high-voltage battery systems or electric powertrains (Aerospace or high-performance EV sectors preferred).

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electronics & Communication, or a closely related discipline.

  • Domain Expertise: Strong engineering comprehension of at least two of the following: BMS architecture, Lithium-ion battery thermal management, or high-power switching topologies (DC-DC converters/inverters).

  • Aerospace Standard Depth: Clear working knowledge and theoretical understanding of aerospace frameworks: RTCA DO-160, RTCA DO-254, SAE ARP4754A, and SAE ARP4761.

Preferred Skills (Good-to-Have)

  • Familiarity with battery-specific standards such as RTCA DO-311A, SAE ARP-7131 or SAE AIR-6464.

  • Experience using requirements management software (e.g., JIRA, Jama Connect, Polarion, Visure or DOORS).
