Tax Manager – Office Lead (Principal in Charge)
We are toogeza, a Ukrainian recruiting company focused on hiring talent and building teams for tech startups worldwide. People make a difference in the big game, and we may help find the right ones. Currently, we are looking for a Tax Manager – Office Lead (Principal in Charge) for Numica.
Numica is a venture-backed accounting technology company building a modern alternative to the traditional accounting firm model. The company acquires established local CPA practices from retiring owners and helps them grow through better technology, AI-assisted workflows, operational support, and access to the resources of a larger organization.
Rather than rebuilding these firms from scratch, Numica keeps the client relationships, teams, and local expertise that made each practice successful, while introducing modern tools and processes that reduce repetitive work and allow accountants to spend more time on judgment, advisory, and client relationships.
The company is growing quickly through acquisitions across the U.S. and already serves thousands of clients across New York, New Jersey, Florida, and other markets.
This position is New Jersey-based, with priority given to candidates located within approximately a 30-mile radius of Jersey City. The role requires primarily onsite presence during the initial transition period, with the possibility of a more flexible or hybrid setup once the practice is established.
About the Role
Step in as the principal in charge of an established accounting practice with an existing book of loyal clients and an experienced team already in place — backed by the capital, technology, and operational support of a growing platform.
You are not building a practice from a cold start. You are taking the helm of a real business, preserving what already works, strengthening client relationships, developing the team, and helping the practice transition to a more modern and efficient operating model.
This is a true player-coach role. You will own the practice’s clients, quality, delivery, and people day to day, while remaining hands-on with tax work where senior judgment and expertise are needed.
Depending on your experience, the scope may start with one practice and expand to multiple New Jersey offices over time.
What You’ll Do
Lead the practice as Principal in Charge — own its clients, quality, delivery, people, and overall performance.
Manage and develop the team — supervise day-to-day work, review deliverables, coach staff, provide feedback, and support their professional growth.
Own client relationships — become the trusted advisor clients rely on through the ownership transition and beyond.
Review and sign off on tax work as the senior technical authority across business and individual clients.
Stay hands-on where your expertise matters most — including tax review, planning, advisory, and complex client situations.
Protect and grow the client base — maintain strong retention and client satisfaction while ensuring continuity through the transition.
Improve operational efficiency — help implement better workflows, processes, and technology across the practice.
Drive technology adoption — work with Numica’s internal team to introduce modern, AI-assisted tools that reduce repetitive work and allow accountants to spend more time on judgment and client advisory.
Take ownership of the team structure — identify where additional resources are needed, participate in hiring, and make changes as the practice evolves.
Partner on future growth — over time, contribute to business development, referrals, upselling, and broader growth initiatives with support from the wider Numica organization.
For more senior candidates, there is an opportunity to take responsibility for multiple nearby practices and grow into a broader regional leadership role.
What You Bring
Active CPA strongly preferred; experienced EAs will also be considered.
Several years of public accounting and tax experience, ideally working directly with small and mid-sized businesses, closely held companies, business owners, and individual clients.
Strong tax expertise across areas such as:
Individual tax
Partnerships
S Corporations
C Corporations
Tax planning and advisory
Familiarity with common U.S. tax returns such as 1040, 1065, 1120, and 1120S.
Experience owning client relationships, onboarding clients, advising business owners, and handling complex client conversations.
Experience leading, supervising, or mentoring accountants, bookkeepers, or tax staff. Formal people-management responsibility is preferred but not mandatory for exceptional step-up candidates.
Comfort remaining hands-on through busy season — this is not a purely managerial role.
Strong communication skills and the ability to build trust with both clients and team members.
A high level of ownership, independence, and agency — you are comfortable taking responsibility for outcomes rather than simply completing assigned tasks.
A tech-forward mindset and openness to learning new systems and working in an increasingly AI-assisted accounting environment.
Experience with tax software such as UltraTax, ProSeries, Drake, or Lacerte is helpful, but not required. Strong accounting fundamentals and adaptability are more important than experience with a particular platform.
Compensation & Benefits
Compensation is flexible and depends on experience, location, and scope of responsibility.
Base compensation can range approximately from $100,000 to $200,000+ annually.
For an exceptional senior candidate capable of overseeing multiple New Jersey practices, compensation above this range may be considered.
Performance-based bonuses may be tied to client retention, client satisfaction, operational performance, and future growth.
Continuing education and CPA/EA license support.
Paid training and professional development.
Paid time off.
Flexible schedule as the practice becomes established.
Potential hybrid / work-from-home flexibility after the initial transition period.
401(k) and health insurance may be available depending on the individual employment arrangement.
What Success Looks Like
During the first 6–12 months, success will primarily be measured across three areas:
Client retention — maintaining the existing client base through the ownership transition.
Client satisfaction — ensuring clients continue to receive high-quality, trusted service.
Technology adoption and operational efficiency — successfully implementing new workflows and tools while improving how the practice operates.
Growth Opportunity
Numica continues to acquire accounting practices across the U.S., creating a much faster leadership path than the traditional accounting-firm model.
A strong Office Lead can grow from managing one practice to several offices, and potentially to responsibility for a much larger regional portfolio.
The growth path is driven by performance, leadership capability, and ambition rather than tenure alone.
If this role sounds like a fit — we’d love to hear from you! Just send over your CV and anything else you’d like us to consider.
We’ll review everything within five working days, and if your background matches what we’re looking for, we’ll get in touch to set up a call and get to know each other better.
