Posted Updated
Discussion

Summary

Tech Lead for the Billing & Fees platform of a fintech company in Spain: owning architecture and roadmap for fee calculation, invoicing, adjustments, and reconciliation services. Hands-on Java/Kotlin with Spring Boot, event-driven microservices (Kafka, SQS), plus mentoring and integrations with Snowflake, Salesforce, and ledger systems.

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Tech Lead (Backend): Billing & Fees based in Spain.

This is an opportunity to lead the technical evolution of a critical billing platform within a growing financial technology environment. You will shape the architecture and roadmap for services that manage fee configuration, transaction calculations, invoicing, adjustments, and reconciliation. The role focuses on replacing manual processes with automated, scalable infrastructure that supports increasingly complex commercial agreements and high transaction volumes. You will combine hands-on backend engineering with technical leadership, guiding architecture decisions and mentoring engineers. Working closely with Product, Finance, Commercial, and other engineering teams, you will translate complex financial requirements into reliable software solutions. The position offers a hybrid or remote working approach within an international, distributed environment.

Accountabilities

  • Own the technical direction, architecture, and engineering roadmap for the Billing & Fees subdomain, ensuring the platform supports evolving commercial models, transaction volumes, and operational requirements.

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable billing services covering fee policy configuration, fee calculation, invoice generation, billing adjustments, and reconciliation.

  • Replace manual billing workflows with automated, reliable processes that improve operational efficiency and reduce errors.

  • Build and maintain robust data pipelines and integrations across systems such as Snowflake, Salesforce, Ledger, and internal financial services, ensuring accurate data flows from transaction processing through invoicing and reporting.

  • Establish engineering practices that protect financial accuracy and auditability, including idempotency, traceability, reconciliation, exception handling, and comprehensive audit trails.

  • Lead technical design submissions, architecture reviews, and service design, applying domain-driven design, hexagonal architecture, and event-driven patterns.

  • Remain hands-on in production code development, technical design, and code reviews while mentoring engineers, resolving complex challenges, and raising engineering standards.

  • Collaborate with Product, Finance, Commercial, Back Office, Ledger, Digital Assets, and Fiat teams to translate business requirements into clear technical solutions and reliable integrations.

  • Drive operational excellence by establishing standards for observability, monitoring, performance, incident response, and service recovery.

  • Guide the team in managing production workloads, including message-processing failures, dead-letter queues, incident resolution, and system resilience.

  • Set expectations for testing, CI/CD, documentation, and technical debt management to ensure consistent delivery and long-term platform maintainability.

  • Balance delivery speed, scalability, reliability, and business priorities while maintaining ownership of business-critical services.

  • Requirements:

    • At least 7 years of backend software engineering experience, with strong hands-on expertise in Java or Kotlin and Spring Boot.

    • Experience leading technical initiatives or providing technical guidance and leadership to other engineers.

    • Proven ability to design and deliver complex, distributed, production-grade systems.

    • Strong knowledge of microservices and event-driven architectures, including technologies such as Kafka and AWS SQS.

    • Experience with relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL and caching technologies such as Redis.

    • Background working with financially sensitive systems, such as billing, invoicing, payments, ledgers, fee calculation, or reconciliation platforms, where accuracy, consistency, auditability, and reliability are essential.

    • Strong architectural knowledge, including domain-driven design, hexagonal architecture, service decomposition, bounded contexts, and asynchronous communication patterns.

    • Demonstrated ability to own technical architecture and make sound engineering decisions while balancing scalability, reliability, delivery timelines, and business requirements.

    • Strong API design experience, including developing and evolving RESTful APIs, maintaining backward compatibility, and establishing reliable integration patterns.

    • Solid understanding of financial data integrity in distributed environments, including transactional consistency, idempotency, error recovery, and reconciliation.

    • Experience mentoring engineers through technical design, code reviews, problem-solving, and complex delivery challenges.

    • A strong production ownership mindset, including experience operating business-critical systems, participating in on-call rotations, and managing incidents.

    • Familiarity with observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, and Micrometer.

    • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, automated testing, and modern software delivery practices.

    • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across Engineering, Product, Finance, and Commercial teams.

    • Comfortable combining hands-on engineering contributions with technical leadership in a distributed, remote-first environment.

    • Benefits:

      • Fair and competitive salary, based on experience and relevant certifications.

      • Flexible working hours and a hybrid/remote working approach.

      • Flexible holiday policy.

      • Opportunities to travel to offices around the world.

      • A collaborative, growth-oriented culture with passionate colleagues.

      • An open and creative environment where employees can contribute to technical direction, company culture, and future opportunities.
