Tech Lead / Solution Architect 8436 W

Summary

Lead the architecture and integration of a wellness platform handling PHI, unifying data from multiple systems (EMR, wearables, billing) with TypeScript/Node.js, React, and cloud services.

Join Akvelon — build products used by millions!

Akvelon is an IT company with 20+ years of experience and 1,200+ engineers across 15+ locations worldwide.

We work with both well-known global tech companies, including Microsoft, Facebook, Airbnb, Dropbox, and Pinterest, and with growing startups.

Our teams are involved in different types of engineering projects, from cloud solutions and AI/ML systems to big data, web, and mobile applications.

Since we are remote-first, our engineers work in distributed teams with flexible hours. We value ownership, clear communication, and the ability to take responsibility for your part of the work.

About the project

The project is a closed-loop wellness platform — a member mobile app, an advisor operations console, and a back office — sitting on top of a deterministic scoring engine, a rules engine, and an integration layer that reconciles data from many production source systems. The central engineering challenge is integration: consolidating around a dozen existing systems (EMR, wearables, labs, billing, messaging) into a single unified experience while handling Protected Health Information (PHI) end to end.

We're looking for a Senior / Lead Tech Lead / Architect to own the solution architecture and act as the named technical lead who works directly with stakeholders. You'll set the technical direction, stay hands-on in the codebase, and drive delivery from discovery through production.

Requirements

  • Senior/Lead-level experience as a Tech Lead and/or Solution Architect on production-grade applications
  • Strong backend engineering background with TypeScript/Node.js (the project's reference stack); solid command of at least one other modern backend language is a plus
  • Proven solution architecture experience: service design, data modeling, API design, and picking canonical sources of truth across multiple systems
  • Deep experience with integration- and API-heavy projects (third-party APIs, webhooks, data reconciliation, auth methods, BAAs where PHI is involved)
  • Experience with the project's leaning stack: Next.js/React + TypeScript, React Native (Expo), Postgres, and a serverless/cloud runtime (Cloudflare Workers/Hono or Node on AWS/GCP)
  • Healthcare / HIPAA experience — building PHI-handling products with audit logging, retention, and vendor BAAs (strongly preferred)
  • Ability to work directly with stakeholders — leading discovery, making and defending architectural decisions, and communicating with technical and executive audiences
  • Strong ownership, clear documentation habits (ADRs, runbooks), and a focus on testable, auditable systems
  • Excellent spoken and written English; comfortable in client-facing settings
  • Meaningful overlap with US business hours for collaboration
Nice to have
  • Experience with wearable/health-data aggregators (Terra, Vital) or EMR systems
  • Experience integrating LLM/AI features under compliance constraints (BAA-covered inference, logging, guardrails)
  • Familiarity with Stripe, managed auth providers (e.g. Clerk), Cloudflare Queues/Cron, or Turborepo monorepos
  • Exposure to SOC 2 readiness and state consumer-health privacy regimes
  • Experience leading turnkey engagements with knowledge transfer / joint-maintenance handoffs

Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end solution architecture across mobile, web, scoring engine, rules engine, and integration layer
  • Lead discovery and build the integration inventory — purpose, data direction, auth, criticality, and fallbacks per source system
  • Define canonical sources of truth per data type and design the reconciliation approach across existing production systems
  • Make and defend key technical decisions (service layer, hosting, auth, background jobs) with maintainability and hireability in mind
  • Architect PHI controls end to end — BAAs, audit logging, retention, and data segregation
  • Stay hands-on: set patterns, review code, and contribute to critical parts of the codebase
  • Coordinate engineers, architects, and delivery, acting as the named point of technical accountability
  • Deliver first-class documentation and knowledge transfer (ADRs, runbooks, on-call playbooks) to support joint long-term maintenance
