Technical Information Specialist

This vacancy is for a GS-1412-9, Technical Information Specialist located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, SFLC ENGINEERING SERVICES DIVISION -SFLC-ESD in BALTIMORE, Maryland.

You will serve as a/an Technical Information Specialist and be responsible for developing, coordinating, indexing, processing, and transmitting marine engineering technical information. The work requires a broad knowledge of marine engineering and technical fields of interest sufficient to understand the significance and relationships of the concepts and ideas contained in the information and a practical knowledge of one or more techniques for organizing, accessing, and disseminating information.. Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include: Acquiring, organizing, accessing, and disseminating information across a wide spectrum of marine engineering subjects and fields, usually of a highly specialized nature. Indexing and preparing technical documents and maintains technical publications and manuals. Managing automated database files containing specialized text and data. Participating in the development of information products (e.g., document storage and management databases). Identifying and evaluating new information sources and tools (e.g., databases, software packages, networks). Developing new methods of organizing and disseminating information such as gateways to specialized databases. Indexing engineering technical information; a process consisting of analyzing and item and assigning descriptive terms which facilitates retrieval of that item. Developing and maintains the controlled vocabularies used for indexing engineering documents. Organizing indexing terms into structured collections in conjunction with subject matter experts.
