Technical Manager
Description
Technical Manager – Electrical Appliances
Location: Wigan
Hours: 35 hours per week | Full-time | Office-based
Working pattern: Flexible start and finish times
Salary: up to £40000
The Opportunity
Are you an electrically qualified professional with experience in household appliances, electrical testing or manufacturing?
We're recruiting for a Technical Manager to join the technical team of an established business operating within the domestic appliance sector.
Despite the job title, this is not a people-management position. It's a hands-on technical role focused on assessing household electrical products, identifying potential issues and helping ensure products meet the required safety, quality and performance standards.
This could suit someone working as a White Goods Engineer, Electrician, Electrical Engineer, Test Engineer or similar, who has the relevant experience and is looking to develop their career in product assessment and technical quality.
You'll work with manufacturers, suppliers and external testing organisations, contributing to product improvements and supporting the successful launch of new products.
Key Responsibilities
- Inspect, assess and test household electrical appliances for build quality, safety and performance.
- Evaluate new products before launch and identify faults, defects or opportunities for improvement.
- Review product specifications, technical documentation and test reports.
- Investigate product faults, customer complaints and returned products, identifying root causes and supporting corrective actions.
- Work with manufacturers and suppliers to resolve technical issues and implement product improvements.
- Liaise with third-party testing and inspection organisations in the UK and overseas.
- Help ensure products comply with applicable safety standards and legal requirements.
- Review product inspections, factory assessments and supplier quality records.
- Monitor supplier performance and support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support the technical processes involved in introducing new products to market.
- Maintain accurate technical documentation and report findings clearly.
About You
We're looking for someone with a practical electrical or engineering background and relevant experience working with household electrical appliances.
You may have gained your experience as a White Goods Engineer, Electrician, Electrical Engineer, Test Engineer or in a similar technical role.
You'll need:
- A relevant electrical, electronic, engineering or technical qualification, or equivalent experience.
- At least three years' post-qualification experience in a manufacturing, product testing or laboratory environment involving household appliances.
- A sound understanding of electrical systems, components and safe working practices.
- Experience of testing, inspecting, fault-finding or assessing electrical products.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and a quality-focused approach.
- The ability to review technical information, document findings and communicate recommendations.
- Confidence working with suppliers, manufacturers and internal teams.
- A proactive approach and the ability to work independently.
Desirable Experience
- Experience in any of the following would be beneficial:
- Domestic or household electrical appliances, including cooking, refrigeration, laundry, dishwashing, microwaves, floorcare or personal care products.
- Product testing, evaluation or quality assurance.
- Product safety and compliance.
- Root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- CE/UKCA marking and relevant product safety standards.
- EMC, LVD, ErP, RoHS or REACH requirements.
- Technical documentation and third-party test reports.

Previous experience in a Technical Manager position is not essential. Relevant technical knowledge and experience are what matter.
