Technical Operations Analyst, BI & Automation
Description
Technical Operations & Data Analyst, BI & Automation
Job type: Full-time employee
Location: Hybrid, Jersey City, NJ (typically 2–4 days onsite per week)
Reports to: VP of Global Operations
Salary range: $65,000–$75,000 per year
About Spare-it
Spare-it is a clean-tech SaaS and IoT company helping organizations measure, report, and reduce in-building waste. Our smart scales, software, and sustainability expertise give enterprise customers the data they need to make informed decisions about waste reduction.
Headquartered in Boston, with operations across North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia, we're a small, international team committed to using technology and data to accelerate circularity.
About the Role
We're looking for a technically capable, resourceful generalist who enjoys working with both data and physical technology.
This is not a traditional business intelligence or exclusively desk-based analytics position. You'll work across technical operations, data analytics, IoT hardware, and process automation. One day you might be building a dashboard or automating a workflow with Python and AI tools. The next, you might be troubleshooting a smart scale, investigating a data anomaly, configuring a digital signage device, or preparing equipment for a customer deployment.
You'll work closely with our operations, customer success, and engineering teams to keep our technology and customer deployments running reliably.
The right person is detail-oriented, comfortable learning new technologies, and motivated by solving practical problems. You don't need to be an expert in every system we use, but you do need to be willing to figure things out, take ownership, and follow through.
This role requires regular onsite work in Jersey City, typically 2–4 days per week, and occasional visits to customer locations.
What You'll Own
Technical Operations & IoT Systems- Monitor the health and performance of deployed IoT devices, including smart scales, gateways, and digital signage.
- Investigate technical issues, troubleshoot hardware and connectivity problems, and coordinate with engineering when needed.
- Configure, test, and prepare devices for customer deployments, including validating scale accuracy and device connectivity.
- Manage hardware inventory, receiving, shipping, and equipment preparation for domestic and international deployments.
- Support customer deployments and maintenance activities, including occasional local site visits.
- Develop and improve operational processes, documentation, and quality-control procedures.
- Monitor project health and identify issues before they affect customers.
- Build and maintain dashboards and reporting tools using AWS QuickSight or similar BI platforms.
- Write SQL queries to investigate operational problems, analyze device performance, and monitor data quality.
- Connect and combine data from multiple systems, including our SaaS platform, HubSpot, and cloud data sources.
- Identify data inconsistencies, investigate root causes, and work with colleagues to resolve them.
- Analyze operational and product data to recommend improvements to processes, thresholds, and system performance.
- Develop meaningful KPIs and reporting that help the team make better decisions.
- Use AI tools such as Claude to accelerate analysis, investigate problems, and improve workflows.
- Build practical automations using Python, AI tools, and other technologies to reduce repetitive work.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reliability across operations.
- Experiment with new tools and technologies, evaluate their usefulness, and implement solutions where they add value.
Who You Are
- A technical problem-solver. You enjoy figuring out how things work and aren't intimidated by unfamiliar systems or equipment.
- Comfortable with both software and hardware. You're as willing to troubleshoot a physical device as you are to investigate a dataset.
- Analytical and detail-oriented. You notice when something doesn't look right, investigate why, and follow through until it's resolved.
- Resourceful and independent. You can research a problem, learn a new tool, and develop a solution without needing detailed instructions at every step.
- Practical about AI. You're interested in using AI and automation to solve real problems, not just experimenting with technology.
- Organized and accountable. You can manage several projects simultaneously and communicate clearly about progress and obstacles.
- Comfortable in a small company. You understand that responsibilities don't always fit neatly into a job title, and you're willing to pitch in where needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, information systems, engineering, business analytics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 2+ years of professional experience in technical operations, data analytics, business intelligence, IT systems, or a related technical role.
- Proficiency in SQL, including writing queries, joining datasets, and investigating data quality issues.
- Experience building dashboards or reports using AWS QuickSight, Power BI, Tableau, Looker, or similar tools.
- Working knowledge of Python or another scripting language for data analysis or automation.
- Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot technical problems and investigate root causes.
- Willingness to perform regular hands-on work with physical equipment, including device setup, testing, inventory, and shipments.
- Ability to work onsite in Jersey City approximately 2–4 days per week.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Authorization to work in the United States without current or future employer visa sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with AWS services such as Athena, S3, or Lambda.
- Experience with HubSpot or other CRM/business systems.
- Experience with IoT devices, hardware troubleshooting, digital signage, mobile device management, or device connectivity.
- Experience developing automations using Python, APIs, AI tools, or workflow automation platforms.
- Familiarity with Claude or other large language models for technical problem-solving and productivity.
- Experience working in a startup, SaaS company, or technical operations environment.
- Interest in sustainability, circular economy, or environmental technology.
- Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 75 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel occasionally to local customer sites (approximately 10–15%).
Benefits
- Health, dental, and vision insurance.
- 401(k) plan.
- Generous paid time off, increasing with tenure.
- Hybrid work flexibility.
- Professional development support for credentials aligned with sustainability, waste, IoT, or SaaS.
- The opportunity to work across multiple technologies and make a direct impact in a small, mission-driven company.
