Summary

Technical Product Manager at Hope Street, a non-profit edtech building AI-powered career-exploration classroom experiences for 5th-12th graders. Day to day you drive product clarity, build tested AI prototypes, research schools/teachers/students, and own outcomes on a 5-person USA-remote team working PST hours.

Compensation: $150k – $225k • No equity

Hope Street, a registered 501(c)(3), creates educational content and a platform for students in 5th-12th grade to help them Explore, Align, and take Action on their careers.

We produce 20-30 minute classroom experiences designed to delight students and to help them make meaningful progress on their careers in a safe and judgment-free zone.

We also gather and share insights with schools about their students which help schools make informed decisions about their career programs, scholarships, and support for students.

Our goal isn’t to replace traditional career investments schools have made, it’s to help students take advantage of the great career support their schools are already offering.

80% of students that work with Hope Street at least 1 time per year say they now see significantly more value in school.

We are early in our product journey, but have several districts that we work with.

We are a team of 5, USA remote, working with schools primarily in California, but planning to expand to our second state this year. We generally work PST hours.

Travel is expected and needed to be effective in this role.

We’re hiring a Technical Product Manager for a few reasons:

  • Clarity without Friction. Let’s face it, in a post-AI world where everyone is making things all the time, it can be really easy to lose that clarity of focus in the things you create. We’re prioritizing an early TPM hire to help combat the fuzziness of a post-AI workplace (AI slop and influence is everywhere, you can spot it and safely guide to on-target value). You are someone who is exceptionally good at driving towards clarity of thought. In work, in writing, in conversations. And you can drive clarity in a caring and empathetic way.

  • Results not theories. You have the skills to wield AI and general tech so that you can communicate through tested prototypes vs conjecture. You also have the expertise in working with end users (in our case, schools, teachers, students) to measure their actions, not their words. You are someone who can be effective in Engineering, Design, and Research.

  • Insurance on success. If as a company we declare a goal of X (for example hitting 35k active users, or launching a new quest series), and you are part of that agreement, you have a history of making sure we hit that goal. On time, on budget, on value. You’ve played the game before, you can see the pitfalls early, and you know that 80% of the work is in the last 20% of the race. You are able to fill in just about any position on any work to make sure we drive it to success. Whatever the obstacle is, you are both experienced and ready to help alongside the rest of the team. Last-minute traveling to talk to a customer, no problem! Manually testing a quest, got you! Raising a critical question with grace knowing it could cause a major pivot, you can count on me!

  • Understands the risks, and plans accourding to risk/reward. Is this an asymetrical risk/reward? Where do we need to be careful, and where is not-bad good enough? You know when to be careful and when to move fast and you can clearly articualte it.

I believe that in a post-AI world startups should hire TPMs much earlier.

Core Experience Requirements:

  • Produced a product using AI that has meaningful adoption
  • Created and supported the growth of a product that has reached 1M users (or equivalent benchmark)
  • UX, UI, User Research
  • At least 5 years in a role where the company relies on your skills as a Product Manager (title doesn’t have to be PM)
  • Working knowledge of engineering and ability to create products
  • Worked in a fully remote startup

More about our values:

  • Trust: Time is short, honesty is important to us. We seek to build trust and to be beacons of trust. (For example: if you use AI to apply and are not upfront about using AI you will be disqualified! AI usage in our interview process is generally ok though!)

  • Accountability: You share the wins/losses, but you also are clear about your failed experiments.

  • Empathy: You can easily, and deeply, enjoy seeing life through many people’s perspectives. Because of this you are also open to many interpretations and ideas.

Pay philosophy: We pay the 75th percentile of levels.fyi for any given role and level, but as a non-profit we do not have the concept of equity. We have generally done a yearly bonus depending on how well Hope Street has done as a company. Generally it is not a large amount, but not insignificant. We are currently planning for a potential hire at mid career, senior, or staff.

Performance philosophy: At the end of the day we are prioritizing our time, energy, and money into you and this role. We generally benchmark employees based on what the market could provide in exchange for that same time, energy, and money. If you are creating an outsized return on value for our students, we’ll make every effort to prioritize more time, energy, and money for you (speaking events, personal coaches, mentoring, publications, whatever you need).

Hope Street is a registered 501(c)(3). We offer benefits including:

Competitive Medical & Dental Plans Competitive Retirement account and matching Modern Laptop and tooling Mandatory minimum 2 weeks PTO (no maximum so long as you are performing)
