Technical Project Manager (Laravel, WordPress & Custom Development)

Posted Updated
Discussion

Summary

Hands-on technical project manager who leads Laravel, WordPress and custom PHP web projects for clients end to end — discovery, sprint planning, deployment and support — while reviewing architecture, jumping into code when needed, and using AI tools to speed up delivery. Core stack: LAMP (PHP 8+, MySQL, Linux, Apache/Nginx) plus WordPress, WooCommerce and JS frontends.

We're looking for a hands-on Technical Project Manager to lead a mix of Laravel applications, WordPress sites and custom-built web solutions on the LAMP stack from discovery to deployment. You'll speak fluent developer, keep clients and stakeholders aligned, and use AI tools to help the team ship faster.

About the role

You'll run a portfolio of projects across three streams: Laravel builds (custom web apps, booking and inventory platforms, client portals, APIs), WordPress sites (custom themes, plugins, WooCommerce, headless setups) and custom development (bespoke PHP and JavaScript solutions, integrations and legacy system work). You'll own scope, timelines, budgets and quality, working daily with developers, designers, QA and clients.

This is a technical role: you'll review architecture decisions, unblock developers, sanity-check estimates and make sure what ships is secure, tested and maintainable. When deadlines are tight, you'll jump into the code yourself.

Key responsibilities

• Lead Laravel, WordPress and custom web projects end to end: discovery, requirements, sprint planning, delivery, UAT, deployment and post-launch support

• Recommend the right approach for each client: WordPress, Laravel or a fully custom build

• Turn business needs into clear user stories, acceptance criteria and technical specs

• Work with developers on architecture, database design, API design and third-party integrations

• Oversee WordPress builds, custom themes and plugins, WooCommerce, site migrations and ongoing maintenance

• Review estimates, manage technical scope and keep code quality, testing, performance and security standards high

• Oversee workflows, code reviews, CI/CD pipelines and releases across dev, staging and production

• Roll up your sleeves and code when needed: fixing bugs, building features, prototyping and unblocking the team in Laravel, WordPress and PHP

• Coordinate LAMP hosting and infrastructure: Linux server setup, Apache/Nginx configuration, MySQL tuning, cPanel/Forge, AWS or similar, DNS, SSL and backups

• Manage client expectations, change requests, budgets and status reporting

• Introduce AI tools into the delivery process where they save time or improve quality

About you

No formal project management certification is required. We care about practical, hands-on delivery: real projects shipped, real teams led and real problems solved.

Essential:

• Extensive experience in web and software project management across Laravel, WordPress and custom PHP projects, ideally with 50+ projects delivered

• Strong working knowledge of Laravel: MVC, Eloquent ORM, migrations, queues, REST APIs, authentication

• Strong working knowledge of WordPress: custom themes and plugins, ACF, Gutenberg, WooCommerce, multisite, security hardening and performance

• Experience delivering bespoke builds outside a framework or CMS, including legacy PHP and integration-heavy systems

• Hands-on coding ability in PHP, Laravel and WordPress: comfortable writing, reviewing and debugging code yourself when the project needs it

• Strong LAMP stack experience (Linux, Apache, MySQL/MariaDB, PHP 8+), plus HTML/CSS/JavaScript, Git, Nginx and web security basics

• Familiarity with frontend stacks (Blade, Livewire, Vue or React)

• Proven delivery for local and international clients, from small sites to enterprise platforms

• Experience leading teams of developers, designers, business consultants and QA, including offshore or distributed teams

• Strong written communication: specs, project plans, estimates and budget proposals

• Degree in Computer Science, IT or a related field

AI skills

You don't need to be an AI engineer. You do need to be a confident, everyday user who can show how AI has made your work better.

• Everyday use of AI assistants (e.g. Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini) for specs, user stories, documentation and status reports

• Awareness of AI coding tools (e.g. GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code) and how they change estimates and code review

• Able to write clear prompts and verify AI output before it reaches clients or production

• Basic understanding of how large language models work, their limits, and data privacy and IP risks

• Curiosity to trial new tools and share what works with the team

Nice to have

• Travel technology experience: inventory, complex packaging, booking engines and B2B/B2C distribution

• Cloud ERP implementations (sales, purchasing, inventory, finance, manufacturing or production planning)

• Experience integrating AI APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic or similar) into Laravel or WordPress applications

• Other CMS or e-commerce platforms (Drupal, Magento, Shopify)

• Laravel ecosystem tools (Forge, Vapor, Nova, Horizon) and WordPress tooling (WP-CLI, Bedrock, managed WP hosting)

• Web application security risk assessment, including government or enterprise work

What we offer

• Opportunity to work on diverse client projects across multiple industries

• Collaborative team environment in Adelaide's growing tech scene

• Professional development for AI/tech training and certifications

• Exposure to AI technologies and real-world applications
