Technical Underwriting Analyst

How does this role contribute to our collective success?

This position is a key role within the Credit and Political Risks team supporting underwriting of individual risks and the broader Unit strategy. For the right candidate, this role would be a route to an underwriting career in the Credit and Political Risk team.

What will you do in this role?

The main functions are:

  • Provide Insurance management, independent opinions and analysis regarding strategy, portfolio construction and performance of the portfolios with respect to an appropriate return on capital and adequacy of rates

  • Internal and outwards reporting – excel exhibits and powerpoint

  • Support Reinsurance analytics and contribute to the structuring of outwards Reinsurance placements

  • Case pricing of new large deals with a particular focus on new sectors and policy structures, working with pricing actuaries

  • Support Underwriting teams in underwriting of credit and political risk enquiries

  • Work with the Unit Head and Head of Technical Underwriting to evaluate new growth areas and develop a robust monitor of market conditions enabling profitable cycle-management

  • Other Ad Hoc tasks to support the Unit Head and Head of Technical Underwriting in their roles

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Case pricing and quantitative assistance to underwriters

  • Assist pricing actuaries to develop and maintain models

  • Work with colleagues across AXIS, in particular GU (Global Underwriting) to explain and enhance the portfolios

  • Produce a framework for tracking Credit rate adequacy across the portfolio over time

  • Work with Risk and Ceded Reinsurance to produce information for reinsurance submissions, present information as needed to reinsurers / brokers and evaluate and recommend structures and pricing.

  • Oversee inputs into Exposure Management for Marine and Credit

  • Interact with Credit and Political Risk database and conduct data analysis to produce useful visualisations and insights that support reporting and inform unit strategy

  • Build tools and dashboards that support the unit’s day-to-day operations and wider underwriting activity

  • Support completion of Lloyd’s Realistic Disaster Scenario processes

About You:

What you need to have:

  • Bsc of 2:1 or above in Mathematics, Physics, Data Science or similar

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to establish credibility with senior management, as well as underwriters, brokers and business leaders

  • Proficient in programming

  • Understanding of, and interest in, finance & economics

  • Good understanding of Probability and Statistics

  • Good knowledge and efficient use of Microsoft Excel

What we prefer you to have:

  • Experience using SQL and knowledge of R and/or Python

  • Experience with VBA Macros in Excel
