Technical Writer

Summary

Creates and maintains technical documentation for defense systems, including manuals, SOPs, and diagrams, while collaborating with engineers to simplify complex concepts.

Technical Writer plays a critical role in supporting DoD contracts and Joint Fires Network (JFN) and is responsible for developing, writing, and maintaining a wide range of high-quality technical documentation, including user manuals, system specifications, integration guides, and standard operating procedures (SOPs). A key part of their role is to create and enhance compelling PowerPoint presentations for technical reviews and stakeholder briefings, as well as to design and update precise technical diagrams, system architecture graphics, and network topologies. The Technical Writer collaborates closely with subject matter experts (SMEs), including engineers and technicians, to translate complex concepts into clear, accessible content while managing the entire documentation lifecycle from draft to final publication.


CORE FUNCTIONS / JOB DUITES

Independently handle the following day-to-day tasks with minimum supervision:

Manage the entire documentation lifecycle from initial draft to final publication, including review and revision cycles.

Collaborate with subject matter experts, interpreting technical data, and ensuring clarity, accuracy, and usability of documentation for a wide range of audiences.

Deliver high-impact documentation, influence cross-functional teams, and contribute to the continuous improvement of documentation standards and practices within the organization.

Lead documentation projects or initiatives of moderate to advanced complexity.

Conduct customer needs analysis, define documentation scope, and plan projects of advanced complexity, including scheduling and coordination with cross-functional teams.

Lead or contribute significantly to the project, organization, composition, and editing of technical and administrative documents, ensuring adherence to standards and regulations.

Help define and enforce documentation standards and templates to ensure a uniform look and feel across all program deliverables.

Research, analyze, design, develop, and implement technical writing projects, gathering and synthesizing information from engineering drawings, technical data, SMEs, and other sources.

Prepare and maintain a variety of documentation, including user guides, manuals, operating procedures, reports, training materials, and online content for print, web, and multimedia environments.

Review and test documents for technical accuracy, clarity, and usability; recommend and implement revisions as needed to ensure clarity, consistency, and adherence to style guides.

Coordinate layout, design, and visual elements such as technical documents, system architecture graphics, network topologies, schematics, flowcharts, graphics, and photographs to enhance documentation.

Work directly with product, engineering, UX, and operations teams to proactively gather input and ensure documentation meets project and user needs.

Participate in cross-functional groups, contributing to information architecture and documentation improvements across areas of ownership.

Research and evaluate new documentation tools, methods, and best practices to improve efficiency and effectiveness of technical writing processes.

Organize and maintain the program's technical documentation library, ensuring all documents are current, version-controlled, and readily accessible.

Create, design, and enhance compelling and professional PowerPoint presentations for technical design reviews, program milestones, and stakeholder briefings.


SKILLS & ABILITIES

Possesses experience and a deep understanding of the following:

Technical writing, preferably within a technology, software development, or defense contracting environment

Written and verbal communication skills, with a keen eye for detail and a talent for explaining complex topics simply

Documentation tools such as MS Office Suite especially Word and PowerPoint, Adobe FrameMaker, Visio and similar diagramming tools, and online publishing platforms

Interpret and synthesize complex technical information for diverse audiences

Leading or coordinating multiple documentation projects or initiatives simultaneously, individually or within a team environment.

Demonstrated expertise in creating professional diagrams and illustrations with tools such as Microsoft Visio, Lucidchart, or Draw.io

Graphic design principles and multimedia content creation

Familiarity with document management systems like SharePoint or Confluence is a plus


EDUCATION & CERTIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, or a relevant field

PAY RANGE

$100,000.00 to $125,000.00 annually, DOE


U.S. Citizenship is Required


SECURITY CLEARANCE

Candidates must have an active TS/SCI clearance and will be subject to a US security background investigation (i.e. favorable background investigation / credit score). Additional eligibility requirements for access to various levels of classified information may also be required.
