Technology Applications Manager

The Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) is seeking a Technology Applications Manager to provide technical leadership across our ecosystem of enterprise, registry, clinical and data applications.
The role will help shape how AOA’s applications evolve, integrate and continue to support the organisation’s strategic and operational needs.

The Opportunity

AOA’s application environment comprises a diverse range of business-critical solutions, delivered and supported by key application vendors.

The Technology Applications Manager will work across this ecosystem, bringing together internal stakeholders and application vendors to oversee application support, enhancements, releases, integrations and continuous improvement. The role will provide technical leadership and help ensure AOA’s applications remain effective, sustainable and well-integrated.

The role works collaboratively with the Technology Operations & Cyber Manager and Technology Program Manager to ensure technology solutions are effectively governed, supported and transitioned into business-as-usual operations. It reports to the CIO.


Key Responsibilities:

Application Operations & Lifecycle Management

· Provide operational oversight of AOA's enterprise, registry, clinical and data applications and platforms.

· Coordinate application support, incident escalation, releases, upgrades and lifecycle activities with technology vendors.

· Monitor application performance, reliability and technical health, identifying risks and opportunities for improvement.

· Coordinate business-as-usual enhancements and continuous improvement activities with internal stakeholders and vendors.

Technical Leadership & Architecture

· Provide technical leadership across AOA's application ecosystem, drawing on specialist technology partners where required.

· Oversee solution design, integrations and technical dependencies across AOA's applications and platforms.

· Identify and manage technical debt, architectural risks and opportunities for simplification and improvement.

· Ensure application design appropriately considers cybersecurity, privacy, data and operational requirements.

Technology Vendor & Ecosystem Management

· Lead relationships with AOA's application, development, architecture, data and other specialist technology vendors.

· Coordinate external providers to ensure their capabilities work effectively within AOA's broader technology ecosystem.

· Monitor vendor performance, service levels, delivery quality and risks, including regular service and roadmap reviews.

· Provide technical and operational input into vendor selection, procurement, contract renewal and future technology investment.

Governance, Transition & Engagement

· Work with the Technology Program Manager to ensure new and significantly changed applications transition effectively into business-as-usual operations.

· Work with the Technology & Cyber Manager to ensure cybersecurity and technology risk requirements are incorporated into application design and operation.

· Identify and manage application, vendor, lifecycle and architecture risks through AOA's technology governance processes.

· Build strong relationships with AOA teams to understand business needs, priorities and opportunities for improvement.

· Provide technical advice and strategic input to the CIO and broader Technology team.

Education/Qualifications:

The appointee will have:

· Tertiary qualifications in Information Technology, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems or a related field; or equivalent demonstrated experience.

To be successful in this role, applicants will have the following knowledge, skills and experience:

· Demonstrated experience managing a diverse ecosystem of enterprise applications within a vendor-supported environment.

· Strong understanding of application lifecycle management, software development practices, solution architecture and systems integration.

· Experience providing technical leadership and working with application vendors to support, enhance and evolve business-critical solutions.

· Sound understanding of cloud technologies, APIs, databases, data platforms and contemporary application architectures.

· Strong vendor and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build effective relationships across technical and business teams.

· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess complex technical issues, dependencies, risks and solution options.

· Sound understanding of cybersecurity, privacy and technology risk principles as they apply to applications and data.

· Ability to translate business needs into practical technology solutions and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Desirable:

· Experience in healthcare, data-intensive, or regulated environments

· Familiarity with cloud-based platforms and system implementation projects

· Experience supporting change, training, and/or transition activities

AOA has more than 2000 members, consisting of most orthopaedic consultants and trainees (registrars) in Australian hospitals, and spanning all orthopaedic subspecialties.

AOA is governed by a Board of Directors elected by Fellows of the Association. The Chief Executive Officer, appointed by the Board, is responsible for AOA’s operations under delegations from the Board. To assist the Chief Executive Officer, the AOA’s operations are separated into portfolios which are stewarded by members of the Executive Leadership Group.

The Technology Portfolio enables AOA to deliver its strategic and operational objectives through a coordinated technology ecosystem.

AOA’s technology capability is delivered through an internal Technology team working with specialist technology vendors. The team provides leadership, governance, coordination and vendor management, while external partners provide specialist capabilities across technology operations, software development, cybersecurity, architecture, testing, data and analytics, and emerging technologies.

The Technology Portfolio is responsible for orchestrating this ecosystem to ensure technology services and platforms are secure, reliable, sustainable and aligned with organisational priorities. The ecosystem supports AOA’s activities across education and training, the AOANJRR, clinical studies and research, member services and corporate operations.

The Technology Portfolio oversees technology across its lifecycle, from strategy and procurement through to delivery, operation and continuous improvement, while supporting the responsible adoption of emerging technologies including data, automation and artificial intelligence.
