Purpose of position: Controls movement of vehicular traffic through construction projects by performing the following duties.

Essential duties/responsibilities:

  • Develops, interprets and implements traffic routing plans or MHT, and type and location of control points from TCS 3, Crew Leader or Project Manager.
  • Distributes traffic control signs and markers along site in designated pattern.
  • Directs movement of traffic through site, using sign, hand, and flag signals.
  • Warns laborers and drivers when approaching vehicle fails to heed signals to prevent accident and injury to workers.
  • Informs drivers of detour routes through construction sites.
  • Records license number of traffic control violators for police.
  • Gives hand marker to last driver in line up of one-way traffic for Flagger at opposite end of site, signaling clearance for reverse flow of traffic.
  • Gives direction to flaggers.

  • Hauls and moves materials at jobsites
  • Stacks materials
  • Shovels and sweeps asphalt
  • Operates small grinders
  • Lays striping materials on roadway
  • Loads and unloads trucks

Job Specifications:

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Basic reading and mathematical abilities
  • Knowledge and skillful implementation of federal and state regulations for work zone safety and traffic control
  • Knowledge of Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Device (MUTCD) guidelines and the translation of this to control traffic by using proper devices and techniques
  • Knowledge of the safe and efficient use of hand and power tools including hand shovel, pick, construction bar, rake, broom, and other handheld power tools.
  • Knowledge of safety rules for construction sites and the ability to abide by them
  • Communication skills
  • Knowledge of and exposure to hazardous materials
