Transformer Design Engineer
Description
About the Role
Our client, an established electrical equipment manufacturer in the Greater Toronto Area, is adding a Transformer Design Engineer to its product team. The role centres on low voltage dry type transformers and gives one engineer real ownership of a design, from the first calculations to the units leaving the plant.
What You Will Do
You will work out new and improved transformer designs, prove them with simulation and testing, and help the plant build them well. You will spend time at your desk and on the shop floor, working with production, quality and purchasing, and you will stay involved after launch to solve problems and keep improving each product.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and refine dry type transformer designs that lower losses, run cooler and cost less to build
- Use simulation software to predict performance and check the results against real test data
- Complete the electrical, magnetic, thermal and mechanical design checks, including insulation and short circuit strength
- Pick the right core, winding and insulation materials for each design
- Produce the drawings, BOMs, specs and build instructions the plant needs
- Plan and review prototype and production testing
- Lead root cause investigations when a design, build or test issue comes up
- Support product certification to North American standards
Must Haves
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a close discipline
- 5+ years in transformer design or transformer manufacturing engineering, ideally low voltage dry type
- A track record of taking a transformer design from concept to production
- Hands on use of engineering simulation tools such as COMSOL or MATLAB
- Strong grounding in transformer fundamentals, losses, insulation and harmonic loading
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
Nice to Haves
- Master's degree or PhD
- P.Eng, or eligible to register
- Medium voltage dry type transformer experience
- Electromagnetic or thermal FEA skills
