Transport Analyst
Role Outline
To lead the delivery of strategic and operational insights that support the medium-term objectives of the Transport and Supply Chain business, driving the optimization of warehouse, distribution, and fleet operations through data-driven analysis, strategic planning, and continuous improvement initiatives. The role is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and implementing opportunities that enhance operational efficiency, service delivery, cost effectiveness, and network performance across the supply chain and leveraging advanced analytics, KPI monitoring, regular and ad hoc reporting, and robust business modelling, the incumbent provides actionable insights that support informed decision-making and the development of optimal transport, warehousing, and distribution solutions. The role also ensures the integrity, validation, and maintenance of critical master data across key operational systems, enabling effective transport planning, fleet utilization, and execution and "making DHL a great place to work".
Key Responsibilities
Delivery Performance, Exceptions & Claims
- Monitor delivery performance including OTD, OTIF, fill rates, POD compliance, delays and transporter KPI adherence
- Analyse delivery discrepancies, claims, damages, shortages and other exceptions to identify root causes and improvement opportunities
- Track claims performance and financial exposure and drive initiatives to reduce losses
Operational Excellence & Continuous Improvement
- Identify operational inefficiencies and support the implementation of improvement initiatives across the transport and supply chain network
- Conduct process analysis, process mapping and operational audits where required
- Develop and implement SOPs based on analysis findings and best practices
Stakeholder Support & Decision Making
- Partner with site operations, transport teams, customers and transport service providers to gather information and drive performance improvements
- Support management decision-making through fact-based analysis, business cases, presentations and recommendations
- Provide training and support on reporting tools, dashboards and analytical solutions
Transport Performance & Cost Analytics
- Analyse transport spend, cost drivers and operational performance to identify opportunities for cost reduction and efficiency improvements
- Develop and maintain dashboards and reports covering transport KPIs, transporter performance, OTIF, turnaround times, vehicle utilisation and service levels
- Monitor and investigate transport performance trends, risks and operational issues and provide recommendations for corrective action
Business Intelligence & Reporting
- Analyse large data sets through data extraction, cleansing, validation, transformation and visualisation
- Develop and enhance BI tools, dashboards and reporting solutions to support business performance
- Ensure accurate and timely distribution of operational, financial and management reports
Network Modelling & Optimisation
- Build supply chain and transport models and conduct scenario ("what-if") analysis to support operational and strategic decision making
- Identify opportunities for network optimisation, NOD/NDD smoothing, delivery frequency optimisation and improved asset utilisation
- Support solution design, business development and continuous improvement initiatives through robust cost-benefit analyses
Qualifications/ Skills/Competencies/Experiences
- Matric
- Relevant professional qualifications
- Tertiary education/ degree - Bcom, Bsc Engineering
- 2-3 years of experience as a Transport Analyst
- 2-3 years experience in Supply Chain environment - preferably road transport industry experience
- Ability to discuss strategic, sensitive issues
- Record of confident dealing with middle management through to decision makers
- Good written and verbal communication skills and understanding of basic mathematical principles
- Ability to compile data in the appropriate format - must be able graphically illustrate trends and statistics
- Good understanding of conventional route to market distribution and transport methods
- Interact with internal and external customers in a courteous and professional manner at all times
- Internet knowledge - research, the ability to learn new methods and skills as required within the scope of work
- Computer software - TOMS, Digitally Connected Transport (DCT) 4-6 yrs
