Provide safe, reliable, and timely transportation for students identified under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act to ensure school stability, regular attendance, and access to educational and extracurricular opportunities. The Transitional Student Driver supports the district's efforts to remove barriers to enrollment, attendance, and participation for students experiencing homelessness.

POSITION FUNDED W/TITLE IA FUNDS

Responsibilities:

  • Safely transport students experiencing homelessness to and from school, school-sponsored activities, tutoring programs, and other approved educational services.
  • Ensure transportation services promote school stability and uninterrupted educational participation.
  • Operate district-approved vehicles in accordance with state law, district policy, and safety procedures.
  • Conduct required vehicle inspections before and after each route and report maintenance concerns promptly.
  • Maintain accurate transportation logs, mileage records, and student attendance records as required.
  • Establish and maintain a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment for students.
  • Exercise appropriate student management techniques while maintaining positive relationships.
  • Maintain confidentiality concerning students' living situations and personal information.
  • Communicate transportation-related concerns to the McKinney-Vento Liaison and appropriate district staff.
  • Assist the district in meeting McKinney-Vento requirements related to transportation and educational access.
  • Follow all district policies regarding student safety, confidentiality, reporting obligations, and emergency procedures.
  • Participate in required district training and professional development.
  • Support efforts to reduce barriers to attendance and educational participation for students experiencing homelessness.
  • Assist with transportation scheduling and coordination as assigned.
  • Perform other duties related to student transportation and support as assigned by the supervisor.

Funding Source:

This position is funded through Title I, Part A Homeless Reservation Funds and is intended to provide transportation services that remove barriers to school attendance and participation for students identified under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.

Qualifications:

  • Texas Class C Driver’s License with acceptable driving record
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to meet all district and state requirements for transporting students.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification preferred or ability to obtain within a designated timeframe.
  • Knowledge of safe driving practices and student transportation procedures.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding student and family circumstances.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with students, families, and district personnel.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including mornings, afternoons, evenings, and occasional weekends.
  • Knowledge of the McKinney-Vento Act preferred.
  • Experience transporting students or working with children preferred.
  • Experience working with at-risk, transitional, or vulnerable populations preferred.

  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Work with frequent interruptions.
  • Exercise sound judgment in emergency situations.
  • Frequent driving and extended periods of sitting.
  • Ability to assist students entering and exiting vehicles.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions.
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of student belongings and equipment.
