Tunnel Engineer – Underground Structures
We are seeking a Tunnel Engineer – Underground Structures (Mining & Civil) to join our Global Capability Centre (GCC) team, supporting the design and delivery of underground structures for mining and civil infrastructure projects.
The successful candidate will have a strong structural engineering background and experience designing permanent underground works, including tunnel linings, shaft linings, underground chambers, portals, declines and associated infrastructure. They will work closely with geotechnical, mining and construction teams to deliver practical and robust underground solutions, who enjoys the challenges of underground engineering and understands how ground conditions influence structural design, without necessarily being a geotechnical specialist.
- Design and assess underground structures including:
- Shaft linings
- Tunnel and cavern linings
- Declines and access tunnels
- Underground chambers and excavations
- Portal structures
- Retaining and support structures associated with underground works
- Develop reinforced concrete, steel and composite structural solutions for underground infrastructure.
- Undertake structural analysis and design considering:
- Ground loading
- Hydrostatic pressures
- Construction loading
- Operational and long-term durability requirements
- Produce engineering calculations, technical reports, specifications and design drawings.
- Work collaboratively with geotechnical engineers to understand ground conditions and incorporate ground-structure interaction into designs.
- Contribute to feasibility studies, concept development, detailed design and construction support.
- Interface with multidisciplinary teams including mining, geotechnical, civil, mechanical and construction specialists.
- Support site activities, design reviews and technical queries during construction.
- Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- 5–8 years of experience in structural design for tunnels, shafts, underground structures or major civil infrastructure.
- Strong understanding of reinforced concrete and structural steel design.
- Experience of underground structures such as:
- Segmental tunnel linings
- Cast in-situ concrete linings
- Shaft linings
- Underground retaining structures
- Buried and below-ground structures
- Familiarity with Eurocodes and relevant international design standards.
- Experience using structural analysis software.
- Ability to communicate technical issues clearly and work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
Desirable Experience
- Mining infrastructure projects.
- Civil tunnelling projects.
- Underground construction methods including TBM, NATM/SCL, shaft sinking and mined excavations.
