This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a UI/UX Engineer based in the United States.
This role sits at the intersection of user experience design and front-end engineering, helping modernize critical federal case management applications.
You will translate user research, high-fidelity prototypes, and human-centered design principles into intuitive, accessible, and production-ready digital experiences.
Working within Agile teams, you will collaborate closely with product owners, architects, developers, HCD specialists, QA, and compliance professionals.
The position combines hands-on React development with UX design, usability testing, accessibility, and design-system practices.
You will help ensure applications meet Section 508, WCAG 2.1 AA, and federal digital service standards while delivering strong performance and security.
Your work will directly contribute to improved usability, reduced UI defects, and more consistent experiences across modernized government systems.
This is a fully remote opportunity with no expected travel and a strong focus on innovation, accessibility, and user-centered technology.
Accountabilities
- Design-to-development delivery: Translate UX research, user insights, and high-fidelity prototypes into responsive, accessible, performant front-end applications and reusable React components.
- Human-centered design: Apply HCD and usability principles throughout Agile development cycles, ensuring solutions are aligned with user needs and program objectives.
- UI engineering: Develop production-ready interfaces using React, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML5, CSS3/Sass, responsive design principles, and reusable component architectures.
- Accessibility and compliance: Evaluate and improve interfaces against Section 508 and WCAG 2.1 AA requirements, supporting accessibility validation and compliance reporting.
- Design systems: Establish and maintain UI/UX and front-end standards, contribute reusable templates and components, and promote consistent design-system adoption.
- Usability testing: Conduct and support heuristic evaluations, card sorting, A/B testing, prototyping, and other validation methods to improve task completion and user satisfaction.
- Agile collaboration: Work closely with product owners, architects, developers, HCD specialists, QA, and compliance teams throughout iterative sprint cycles.
- Quality assurance: Partner with QA and compliance teams to validate usability, accessibility, consistency, and performance before production releases.
- Continuous improvement: Use feedback, analytics, emerging technologies, and industry best practices to identify opportunities for improving digital experiences and reducing post-release defects.
- Documentation and governance: Produce HCD implementation plans, accessibility reports, design documentation, and other artifacts aligned with program, Agile, and governance requirements.
- Stakeholder engagement: Present design and engineering rationale to technical and non-technical audiences, build strong customer relationships, and provide clear recommendations for improvement.
- Innovation: Explore emerging UX technologies, AI-assisted design tools, predictive usability approaches, and secure interface practices to enhance user experiences.
- Experience: 10+ years of general information systems experience and 8+ years of specialized UI/UX design and development experience, including substantial Human-Centered Design work supporting enterprise or government applications.
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Design, or a related field. Equivalent professional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Front-end development: Strong proficiency in React, including reusable functional components, state and props management, responsive interfaces, and production application integration.
- Web technologies: Strong command of JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML5, CSS3, Sass or other CSS preprocessors, and responsive design principles.
- UX design: Expertise in usability testing and research techniques such as heuristic evaluation, card sorting, A/B testing, prototyping, and iterative validation.
- Design tools: Proficiency with tools such as Figma, Sketch, Miro, Axure, InVision, and Storybook or comparable platforms.
- Federal accessibility: Practical experience with Section 508, WCAG, and accessibility validation tools such as Axe, WAVE, Color Oracle, or Siteimprove.
- Agile delivery: Strong understanding of Agile/SAFe methodologies and the ability to integrate UX and engineering activities into iterative delivery environments.
- Government experience: Experience designing digital products for federal programs, government modernization initiatives, or complex case management environments is highly valuable.
- Design governance: Familiarity with DesignOps, UX governance, design systems, and reusable UI component strategies.
- Analytics: Exposure to data-driven UX optimization using tools such as Google Analytics, Hotjar, or similar platforms.
- Security: Understanding of secure user interface principles and Zero Trust design concepts.
- Communication: Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and storytelling skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with technical teams, business stakeholders, and senior customers.
- Consulting mindset: Ability to work independently and collaboratively, build trusted stakeholder relationships, analyze complex problems, and translate findings into practical recommendations.
- Preferred certifications: Certified Usability Analyst, Certified HCD Professional, SAFe Agile Practitioner, Section 508 Trusted Tester, or recognized UX/HCD certifications such as NN/g, IDEO, or HFI.
- Salary: Likely annual salary range of $128,039–$173,229, with actual compensation determined by experience, location, and applicable contractual requirements.
- Work arrangement: Fully remote position with a standard 40-hour work week.
