Summary

Provides daily care and support to shelter residents, including socialization, crisis intervention, and facility monitoring in a New York City shelter.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Some experience in a human services setting.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Must obtain a food handlers certificate within 45 days of hire (Hylan Shelter only).
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License preferred.

Work Eligibility: Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Work Location Requirement: Onsite

Schedule: 12:00am-8:30am Thursday-Monday

Compensation: $19.8077

About the Role

The Unit Counselor supports residents by providing care, support, socialization, crisis intervention, and facility monitoring across shelter programs.

Primary Responsibilities

• Participate in or conduct orientation for new residents.
• Communicate program processes and activities to residents.
• Provide social support and motivational interviewing interventions.
• Provide transportation for residents to appointments as needed.
• Assist with meal-related activities including warming, serving, and cleanup.
• Document neighborhood activities and resident interactions.
• Participate in crisis intervention as needed.
• Attend management, supervision, and required training meetings.
• Report serious incidents and complete required incident documentation.
• Conduct hourly rounds and ensure resident wellbeing.
• Arrive to work on time and as scheduled.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
