Description

US Field Service Engineer - Laboratory Automation

Location: Home-based in the northeastern US. Frequent travel throughout the US is required, with trips lasting up to two weeks at a time.
Salary: $90,000 USD per year
Equipment and travel: Laptop, phone and tools provided. Vehicle arrangements to be confirmed (car allowance or lease vehicle).
Employment Type: Full-time
Reports to: Head of Support - Americas

At Labman, we design and build custom automation platforms, workcells and products that help customers solve complex laboratory challenges.
Our customers span a wide range of industries, supporting applications from sample preparation and materials testing to large-scale laboratory workflows. Each custom platform or workcell combines automation, software, mechanical engineering and scientific expertise to meet a specific customer need.
We're looking for a US-based Field Service Engineer to support our growing customer base across the US.

The Role

You'll be a key technical contact for our US customers, installing, maintaining and supporting Labman systems and helping customers get the best from their equipment. The role combines hands-on engineering, travel and customer interaction.
You might currently work with scientific instruments, analytical equipment, laboratory automation, robotics or other complex technical systems. What matters most is your ability to understand equipment, investigate problems and develop practical solutions.
This is more than routine servicing. Because our platforms and workcells are custom-built, some faults require first-principles investigation rather than a predefined troubleshooting procedure. You'll need to learn unfamiliar systems quickly, develop and test hypotheses, and identify root causes, working closely with Labman's UK support and engineering teams to develop and implement solutions.

What You'll Do

  • Install and commission Labman platforms and workcells
  • Carry out preventive maintenance, repairs and upgrades
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical and software faults using engineering drawings, electrical schematics, software logs and first-principles troubleshooting
  • Provide remote and onsite technical support
  • Support validation and acceptance testing activities
  • Identify long-term corrective actions to prevent recurring faults
  • Work closely with Labman's UK support and engineering teams to resolve technical problems
  • Document service activities and customer feedback
  • Build strong relationships with customers and act as a trusted technical contact

What You'll Bring

We're looking for the following core capabilities:

  • Evidence of independently diagnosing complex equipment or process failures, including situations without step-by-step service instructions
  • The ability to interpret engineering documentation and apply scientific or engineering knowledge to practical problems
  • Clear communication skills and an interest in helping customers understand technical issues and solutions
  • Curiosity, practical judgment and a willingness to work directly with unfamiliar equipment
  • Relevant qualifications or equivalent practical experience may come from analytical or applied chemistry, chemical engineering, mechatronics, robotics, automation, mechanical or electrical engineering, scientific instrumentation, or laboratory science with significant equipment ownership and troubleshooting responsibility.
  • You may have around 3–5 years of relevant industry experience, but demonstrated technical judgment matters more than a fixed number of years or a conventional career path. A master's degree or PhD can be valuable when combined with practical experience but is not required.

Desirable Experience

The following experience would be advantageous, but is not essential:

  • Supporting scientific instruments, laboratory automation, robotics or comparable complex systems
  • Working in laboratory or analytical chemistry environments, including equipment troubleshooting and investigation
  • Working with HPLC, GC, spectroscopy, sample preparation equipment or similar instrumentation
  • Providing customer-facing technical support, field service, commissioning, validation or applications support

Benefits: Labman offer a competitive benefits package which includes healthcare, 401(k) retirement savings plan and 33 days paid vacation (inclusive of federal holidays).
