Located along the beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline in Manitowoc, MDVC is an established, multi-doctor small-animal practice that has served the community since 1977.
We're committed to helping the next generation of veterinarians gain meaningful, real-world experience.
What Your Externship Can Look Like
Every externship is an opportunity to learn, but we want you to be an active participant in your experience. Depending on your experience level, interests and the hospital's caseload, you may have opportunities to:
- Gather patient histories and perform physical examinations
- Develop and discuss diagnostic and treatment plans
- Participate in wellness and sick-patient appointments
- Follow cases from initial presentation through diagnosis and treatment
- Participate in medical case discussions
- Gain experience with diagnostic imaging
- Observe and assist with surgical procedures
- Participate in dentistry and dental procedures
- Learn about anesthesia and patient monitoring
- Gain experience with medical case management
- Work with our veterinary team and support staff
- Experience a variety of companion-animal cases
- Potentially see exotic and non-traditional companion-animal cases
All hands-on activities will be performed at a level appropriate to your training and under appropriate veterinary supervision.
Learn From Experienced Veterinarians
An externship should be more than a line on your résumé. Our goal is to give you an opportunity to learn what practicing veterinary medicine really looks like.
You'll work alongside our veterinarians, have opportunities to ask questions and discuss cases, and gain insight into the clinical decision-making that happens every day in a busy general practice.
Whether you're early in veterinary school and exploring different areas of medicine or you're preparing for your clinical rotations, we'll work to make your experience meaningful and educational.
Experience Modern Smal Animal Medicine
MDVC combines the feel of an established community practice with modern diagnostic and treatment capabilities. Depending on your rotation and the hospital's caseload, you may gain exposure to:
- Digital radiography
- Digital dental radiography
- Ultrasound
- In-house laboratory diagnostics
- Dentistry
- Surgery
- Anesthesia
- Preventive medicine
- Internal medicine
- Medical case management
You'll also experience the communication and relationship-building side of veterinary medicine, working with clients and seeing how veterinarians translate medical recommendations into practical care plans.
A Practice With a Long History of Caring
Memorial Drive Veterinary Clinic has been part of the Manitowoc community since 1977.
We've built lasting relationships with generations of clients and their pets, and we believe that excellent veterinary medicine is about more than treating a disease. It's about caring for patients, supporting their families and working together as a team.
As an extern, you'll have the opportunity to see what that kind of community-based veterinary medicine looks like in practice.
Why Manitowoc?
Your externship isn't just about what happens inside the hospital. Manitowoc sits along the Lake Michigan shoreline and offers easy access to beaches, trails, parks, boating, fishing, restaurants and outdoor recreation. It's a great place to experience life in a welcoming Wisconsin community and to see why so many people choose to build their careers here.
Could Memorial Drive Be Your Future Practice?
An externship can be more than a short-term learning experience. It can be an opportunity to discover what type of veterinarian you want to become and what type of practice environment feels right for you.
If you enjoy your experience at MDVC, we'd love to stay connected and explore future opportunities with you as you progress through veterinary school and toward graduation.
Come learn with us. Build your skills. Meet our team. Experience Memorial Drive.

We're excited to learn more about you, your goals and what you hope to gain from your externship.
