Wage and Hour Specialist

This position is located within the Wage and Hour Division (WHD), the Office of Policy (OP), Division of Fair Labor Standards Act and Child Labor (FLSA-CL). The mission of WHD is to plan, develop and administer programs to provide for the execution of the Department's responsibilities under FLSA and other Acts and Statutes.

As a Wage and Hour Specialist you will perform the following duties which are not all-inclusive: Prepares educational, promotional, and explanatory materials; prepares responses to inquiries from employers, employees, unions, business associations, other government officials, and members of Congress regarding program enforcement guidelines and interpretations, and responses to requests under the Freedom of Information Act, and provides technical input for speeches. Reviews program policies, regulations, and other guideline materials for currency, relevance, and sufficiency; drafts new or revised program policies, regulations and other guideline materials to implement new or amended statutory provisions or to reflect policy changes. Provides direct feedback and authoritative interpretations to the field and external interested parties on program policies, regulations, and other guidelines, as well as through the Field Operations Handbook; drafts interpretations and opinions for the signature of the WHD Administrator. Serves as liaison with WHD Regional and District Office officials regarding field enforcement policies and procedures relating to the conduct of investigations; provides technical expertise to WHD Regional and District Office officials regarding the application of regulations and interpretations. Analyzes, develops, and recommends policy options for implementation within WHD National Office and by nationwide field staff; develops and coordinates efforts to provide a uniform and consistent approach for resolution of statute violations. Coordinates with the Office of the Solicitor (SOL) in obtaining advice on legal matters arising during the interpretation, enforcement, and administration of statute, as well as with appropriate legislative proposals and litigation priorities. Also ensures that documents setting out overall enforcement policies, regulations, procedures, etc., are legally correct.
