Job Description & Requirements

1. Planning and Estimation

  • Reading Blueprints: Interpreting technical drawings, floor plans, and design specifications to determine layout and material requirements.
  • Calculating Materials: Measuring wall surfaces accurately to estimate the quantity of tiles, adhesives, and grout needed.
  • Providing Quotes: Estimating labor costs and timelines for clients or project managers.

2. Surface Preparation

  • Cleaning and Removal: Removing old tiles, existing grout, or debris and ensuring the substrate is clean and dry.
  • Levelling and Repairing: Applying plaster, sand, or cement to fill gaps and cracks, ensuring the surface is perfectly level and even.
  • Waterproofing: Applying specialized waterproofing systems, especially in "wet areas" like bathrooms, kitchens, and around swimming pools

3. Tile Installation

  • Laying Out: Marking out reference lines (setting out) to ensure patterns are centered and harmonious.
  • Cutting and Shaping: Using hand tools and power cutters to trim tiles to fit around obstacles like pipes, fixtures, and corners.
  • Fixing Tiles: Spreading adhesive or mortar and carefully positioning tiles, using spacers to maintain even gaps.
  • Quality Checks: Constantly checking alignment and evenness using spirit levels and straightedges

4. Finishing Work

  • Grouting: Filling the joints between tiles with grout once the adhesive has set.
  • Cleaning and Polishing: Removing excess grout with damp sponges and polishing the tiles for a final finish.
  • Sealing: Applying sealants to protect tiles and grout from moisture and staining.

5. Professional and Safety Duties

  • Site Maintenance: Keeping the workspace clean, disposing of old materials safely, and maintaining tools.
  • Safety Compliance: Adhering to workplace health and safety (WHS) regulations, including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) like knee pads and safety glasses.
