Position Overview
Our client is seeking an experienced Web Application Architect to lead the design, evolution, and operational excellence of our customer-facing web applications and digital experience platforms.
This role owns the architecture of scalable, secure, high-performing web applications delivered through modern cloud-native and JAMStack patterns. The Web Application Architect works across application architecture, API design, content delivery, cloud services, authentication, commerce integrations, observability, and customer data collection.
The role partners closely with Product, Data Engineering, Infrastructure, Analytics, Privacy, and the MarTech Solution Architect to ensure client's digital experiences are reliable, performant, privacy-aware, and capable of supporting customer data, personalization, analytics, and marketing activation needs.
Responsibilities
- Architect and lead development of large-scale customer-facing web applications
- Own technical architecture for web and digital experience platforms
- Design scalable, fault-tolerant, secure, and maintainable application architectures
- Lead architecture for JAMStack applications, API-driven frontends, Cloudflare delivery, AWS services, and backend integrations
- Own backend architecture and data flows across APIs, databases, external feeds, and third-party services
- Architect integrations with headless CMS platforms, especially Contentful, and other content/data sources
- Design and support integrations with commerce, customer account, location, personalization, analytics, and marketing systems
- Own application-layer authentication, authorization, account management, and customer identifier implementation
- Implement customer event instrumentation standards in partnership with the MarTech Solution Architect
- Ensure consent and preference signals are enforced appropriately in the application layer
- Establish standards for code quality, performance, security, observability, CI/CD, and maintainability
- Lead production troubleshooting and architectural decision-making under real-world business and traffic constraints
- Mentor engineers and guide teams on pragmatic architecture and engineering best practices
- 7-10+ years of experience designing, building, and maintaining commercial web applications
- 3+ years in an architect, staff engineer, principal engineer, technical lead, or comparable role
- Proven experience supporting customer-facing applications with meaningful production scale and real user traffic, ideally 10k+ monthly active users or higher
- Strong backend development experience using JavaScript and Node.js
- Experience with REST and/or GraphQL APIs, JSON, XML, CSV feeds, and third-party data integrations
- Strong understanding of data modeling, application performance, caching, API design, and integration patterns
- Hands-on AWS experience, including cloud-native application architecture
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code such as Terraform or CloudFormation
- Experience designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines for web applications and backend services
- Familiarity with Cloudflare, CDN architecture, edge caching, web security, and global content delivery
- Experience with JAMStack, static/dynamic rendering tradeoffs, API-driven frontends, and headless CMS platforms
- Strong production debugging, incident response, and performance optimization skills
- Upper-intermediate or higher English level
- Contentful or comparable headless CMS platforms
- Shopify or comparable commerce platform integrations
- Segment, GA4, Mixpanel, or comparable instrumentation and analytics tools
- Customer authentication, identity, account management, and consent enforcement patterns
- Firebase, Mapbox, mobile-web integrations, or location-based digital experiences
- Accessibility, SEO, Core Web Vitals, experimentation, personalization, or digital commerce optimization
- Experience in entertainment, media, ticketing, commerce, subscription, or high-traffic consumer digital businesses
- Web applications are scalable, secure, reliable, and performant
- Digital experiences integrate cleanly with content, commerce, customer account, analytics, and MarTech platforms
- Customer events are captured accurately and consistently at the source
- Application-layer consent and privacy requirements are implemented effectively
- Engineering teams have clear architecture standards, reusable patterns, and reduced technical debt
- Production issues are diagnosed and resolved quickly with strong observability and operational discipline
