About the company

Our client is a law firm.

The role

Raydar is recruiting for this role on behalf of our client. Advise business clients on workplace legal questions, combining day-to-day counseling with defense of disputes and occasional union-related work. You will join a collaborative, mentorship-oriented team where junior lawyers get real client exposure early.

What you'll do

- Give employer clients practical guidance on everyday people-management questions, including pay practices, discrimination, harassment, leave and accommodation, under federal and New York law.

- Prepare and revise handbooks, workplace policies, hiring and exit documents, and agreements that limit post-departure activity.

- Advise on recruiting practices, discipline, terminations, workforce reductions and leaves of absence.

- Defend clients in workplace disputes before agencies and courts, from initial responses through pretrial motions, witness examinations and settlement discussions.

- Support union-related matters such as bargaining, grievances and arbitration as a secondary part of the practice.

- Lead training sessions and internal workplace investigations for a varied client base.

- Work alongside partners and associates in an informal team where senior lawyers pull you into matters and hand over meaningful pieces of work.

Requirements

What we're looking for

- Three to seven years of private-practice experience representing employers in workplace law matters.

- A background at a law firm rather than solely at a government agency.

- A core practice in advising on pay, discrimination, leave and disability issues and drafting related policies.

- Hands-on dispute experience and comfort with contested matters.

- Working knowledge of federal and New York workplace statutes.

- JD from an accredited law school.

- Admission to the New York bar, or eligibility and willingness to waive in.

- Excellent written advocacy skills, with a writing sample available on request.

- A collaborative, low-ego style and responsive, proactive communication.

- Pragmatic, business-minded approach to advising clients.

- Based in, or willing to relocate to, Rochester or Buffalo, New York.

Bonus points

- Exposure to union-side matters such as bargaining agreements, grievances, arbitration or labor board proceedings.

- Experience supporting corporate transaction diligence on workforce-related issues.
