In 1974, Enable New Zealand was brought to life as the Aids and Appliances Unit at Palmerston North Hospital, founded by Terry and dedicated staff who saw a critical gap in support for disabled and injured New Zealanders. What began as a small hospital department has grown into the nation's largest provider of disability equipment, information, and modification services, serving over 100,000 New Zealanders each year. Today, Enable New Zealand operates as a Crown-owned entity managing over $270 million in revenue and government funds, with a team of over 190 dedicated staff. The organization delivers essential services on behalf of Disability Support Services (DSS) under the Ministry of Social Development and the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC). Their comprehensive offerings include disability and rehabilitation equipment, housing and vehicle modifications, needs assessment and service coordination, subsidy and funding services for hearing aids and children's spectacles, and the national Firstport information service. Through their EASIE Living demonstration centre, they provide a one-stop-shop for disabled people, older people, and caregivers seeking products and information for independent living. With offices in Palmerston North, Christchurch, and Hamilton, Enable New Zealand continues its founding mission: helping disabled people and their whānau live everyday lives in their communities.
