About

ERCOT is the independent system operator that manages electric power flow for 27 million Texas customers, representing about 90% of the state's electric load. It schedules power on a grid spanning 54,100 miles of transmission lines and more than 1,250 generation units, including private use networks. ERCOT also handles financial settlement for the competitive wholesale bulk-power market and administers retail switching for 8 million premises in choice areas. The organization is a membership-based 501(c)(4) nonprofit governed by a board of directors and overseen by the Public Utility Commission of Texas and the Legislature. Its diverse membership—including consumers, cooperatives, generators, marketers, retail providers, investor-owned and municipal utilities—creates a unique, integrated stakeholder platform within Texas's electric market.
