About
LiveOnNY is the nonprofit, federally designated organ procurement organization (OPO) dedicated to facilitating organ, eye, and tissue donation for transplantation in the greater New York metropolitan area. Established in 1978, the organization serves a culturally and ethnically diverse population of 13 million residents across New York City, Long Island, and the lower Hudson Valley. LiveOnNY's core mission is to save lives, provide comfort, and strengthen legacies. This is achieved through close collaboration with nearly 100 local hospitals and 11 transplant centers to coordinate the complex process of donation. The team, composed of over 300 clinicians, educators, and social workers, works around the clock, 365 days a year, to manage the logistical and clinical aspects of donation and transplantation, ensuring that the selfless gift of life from donors reaches those in critical need. Beyond its primary function of organ recovery, LiveOnNY is deeply committed to supporting the families of donors with compassion and providing aftercare services. The organization also plays a crucial role in public education and advocacy, working to dispel myths about donation and encourage more New Yorkers to register as organ, eye, and tissue donors. Under the leadership of President and CEO Leonard Achan, who joined in late 2021, LiveOnNY has experienced a period of significant growth and success, increasing the number of organ donors, tissue donors, and organs transplanted by over 50% in two years. The organization's philanthropic arm, The LiveOnNY Foundation, further supports this mission by funding innovative projects and providing aid to both donor and recipient families throughout their transplant journeys, reinforcing its commitment to honoring donors and saving lives.
