The story of the Region of Peel is one of rapid transformation, resilience, and enduring community service. Established on January 1, 1974, by the Ontario government under Premier Bill Davis, the Region was formed to replace the former County of Peel, specifically designed to manage the burgeoning growth of the area immediately west of Toronto. At its inception, the Region served a modest population of 333,000 residents across the municipalities of Brampton, Mississauga, and Caledon. Over the ensuing decades, it has evolved into a dynamic municipal powerhouse, now supporting over 1.5 million people and 175,000 businesses, firmly establishing itself as the second-largest municipality in Ontario and a critical economic hub for the province. Throughout its fifty-year history, Peel has been at the forefront of municipal innovation, from pioneering advanced waste management solutions to developing a robust 'Community for Life' vision that prioritizes the well-being of every resident. The organization has successfully navigated significant challenges, most notably the intense provincial review and the proposed-then-reversed dissolution in 2023, emerging from these uncertainties with a renewed and strengthened commitment to service excellence. Today, the Region of Peel stands as a vital pillar of the Greater Toronto Area, delivering a complex array of essential services ranging from paramedics, public health, and long-term care to water treatment, housing support, and infrastructure planning. With a workforce of over 5,000 dedicated employees, the Region continues to foster a diverse, inclusive, and forward-thinking workplace culture that adapts to the changing needs of its growing community.
