Since our founding in 1970 by a group of journalists and media lawyers, the Reporters Committee has been the only national organization solely dedicated to providing pro bono legal services to journalists. We offer a comprehensive suite of resources tailored to the challenges modern journalists face. Our 24/7 legal hotline provides immediate assistance for urgent matters, while our team of staff attorneys offers direct representation in court cases involving First Amendment freedoms, freedom of information, and court access. We also file friend-of-the-court briefs in significant cases that could set precedents for press freedom. Recognizing the growing need for localized support, our Local Legal Initiative places attorneys in several states to provide direct legal services to local news organizations. Furthermore, our ProJourn program connects journalists with a network of pro bono attorneys from law firms and corporate legal departments.
