RINA S.p.A. is a multinational company with a rich history dating back to its foundation in Genoa, Italy, in 1861 as the Registro Italiano Navale (Italian Naval Register). Initially established as a ship classification society to serve the needs of the Italian maritime industry, RINA has evolved significantly over its more than 160 years of operation. For its first 140 years, the organization primarily focused on ensuring the safety and seaworthiness of vessels flying the Italian flag. A pivotal moment in its history came in 1999 when a European Council directive liberalized the ship classification market.
