Description

About the Role
Red White & Blue Thrift is a national growth-oriented & private equity-backed thrift retail chain currently operating 34 stores plus depots, warehouses, and donation centers across multiple markets. We are hiring an Accountant II for our Torrance, CA office to own core pieces of the monthly close and the balance sheet, reporting to the Vice President, Finance and working closely with the CFO.
This is a hands-on role for someone who can run a close independently, keep fixed assets and reconciliations audit-ready, and bring a process-improvement mindset to a finance team that actively uses Microsoft Business Central, Microsoft 365, and Claude AI in its daily work. The right candidate is comfortable with multi-location retail accounting and wants to grow with a company in expansion mode.
Key Responsibilities
Month-end close

Own assigned areas of the fiscal (4-4-5) close calendar and deliver accurate and timely financials according to the closing calendar
Prepare and post journal entries, including accruals, prepaids, reserves, and reclasses as necessary
Post and review store-level sales, cash, and deposit postings for completeness and accuracy
Prepare period-end variance analysis against budget and prior year for assigned P&L and balance sheet lines
Support preparation of the board financial package and lender reporting

Fixed assets

Maintain the fixed asset subledger in Business Central: additions, disposals, transfers, and depreciation
Track capital projects (new store openings, remodels, equipment) from CIP through placement in service
Reconcile the fixed asset subledger to the general ledger every period
Coordinate with Operations on capital spending forecasts
Prepare fixed asset rollforwards and support tax depreciation schedules

Balance sheet reconciliations

Prepare monthly reconciliations for assigned accounts: cash, prepaids, accrued liabilities, fixed assets, intercompany, and sales tax
Clear reconciling items timely and escalate aged or unusual items
Maintain reconciliation support in a consistent, audit-ready format
Contribute to the ongoing effort to automate reconciliation workflows using Claude and Excel

Audit, tax, and compliance

Serve as a primary point of contact for the annual financial statement audit: PBC preparation, walkthroughs, and support
Support 1099 reporting and other year-end requirements

Process and systems

Identify and implement process improvements across the close, leveraging Microsoft Business Central, FYISoft, Excel, and Claude
Document accounting procedures and maintain the close checklist
Assist with Business Central configuration, dimension structure, and report development as the company grows
Provide guidance and review for staff accountants and AP/AR team members

Qualifications
Required

Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance from a 4-year college or university
5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years owning month-end close responsibilities
Hands-on fixed asset accounting experience, including CIP and multi-location asset tracking
Strong working knowledge of US GAAP and ability to research and document technical positions
Advanced Excel skills (lookups, pivot tables, Power Query, structured data modeling)
Experience supporting an external financial statement audit
Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to meet hard close deadlines with minimal supervision

Preferred

CPA or active CPA candidate
Multi-unit retail, restaurant, or similar high-transaction-volume industry experience
Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central (or NAV) experience
Experience in a private equity-backed company with lender and board reporting requirements
Experience using AI tools such as Claude in day-to-day accounting work, or strong interest in building that capability
Familiarity with lease accounting (ASC 842) and multi-state sales tax

What Success Looks Like

Assigned close areas are complete and reviewed according to the closing calendar with no late adjustments
Every assigned balance sheet account is reconciled monthly with no items aged over 60 days
Fixed asset records tie to the GL every period and audit fixed asset testing produces no adjustments
Consistent, significant progress in automating accounting processes to Claude
