This role is data engineering with AI woven through it in two ways.
AI tooling is part of daily engineering practice here. You'll use AI assistants for SQL, any required coding, pipeline development, debugging and analysis every day, alongside our internal tooling. We expect you to be fast with it and sceptical of it in equal measure.
Early on the bulk of your output will be core platform work: pipelines, models, data quality and reporting. As you understand the domain, you'll build AI and automation solutions that solve real problems for the business and that share grows as the platform matures.
Please note this is a full-time, five-days-per-week onsite role based in East Tamaki.
Key Responsibilities
Data platform
Build and maintain scalable ETL/ELT pipelines across ecommerce, ERP, finance, and operational systems.
Design data models and hold the line on data quality through validation, reconciliation, and governance.
Work across SQL Server and MySQL, tuning queries and schemas for performance and reliability.
Integrate data from APIs, cloud services and third-party platforms.
Design and build reporting for commercial and operational teams.
AI and automation
Utilise AI tools and critically evaluate output to assist with traditional data tasks.
Build and ship AI and automation solutions, including generative and LLM use cases.
Evaluate emerging AI tooling and feed that into PB Tech's AI roadmap.
What You'll Bring
Must have 4+ years in data engineering, analytics engineering, or business intelligence.
Advanced SQL and experience with large datasets.
Proven experience designing and supporting ETL/ELT solutions, including the data modelling and integration design behind them.
Experience delivering reporting that meets stakeholder requirements.
Demonstrated fluency using AI tooling in daily engineering work, and the judgement to verify what it gives you rather than shipping it blind.
Able to explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders, and to push back when a request doesn't make sense.
Existing right to work in New Zealand.
Standard working days are Monday to Friday on-site, with occasional work required outside of regular hours. (Flexibility is offered to accommodate these needs)
Highly Regarded
Experience with retail, ecommerce, ERP, finance, logistics or supply chain data.
Python development and automation scripting.
SQL Server or MySQL administration.
Having taken an AI or LLM solution from concept through to production.
Direct MCP (Model Context Protocol) experience is a strong plus.
