Android Engineer(Flutter)
Description
About the Role
We operate a mature mobile application targeting global markets, built primarily on a Flutter + native Android/iOS hybrid architecture.
Our current technical focus is elevating user experience for international markets, specifically improving fluidity, stability, and resource efficiency on low-end Android devices. In this role, you will dive deep into the Flutter Engine, Flutter framework, Dart business logic, and native Android layers to locate and resolve cross-layer performance bottlenecks, continuously delivering high-impact optimizations.
Key Responsibilities
Performance Governance: Lead performance optimization for our Flutter & Android hybrid app, focusing on startup speed, frame rates, memory usage, battery efficiency, and stability on low-end devices.
Deep Troubleshooting: Diagnose frame drops, UI jank, ANRs, OOMs, memory leaks, and CPU spikes across complex scenarios—tracing root causes through Flutter rendering, platform channels, native threads, and system calls.
Flutter Rendering Optimization: Optimize Flutter widget building, layout, and rendering pipelines—reducing unnecessary rebuilds and resolving issues related to image loading, long lists, animations, and asynchronous tasks.
Hybrid & Native Optimization: Refine native Android modules, Flutter-to-native interop, 3rd-party SDK initializations, and resource lifecycles to minimize main-thread blocking and cross-layer overhead.
Metrics & Regression Control: Build production performance monitoring, device tiering, and performance regression mechanisms, setting baseline benchmarks tailored for low-memory devices and weak network conditions overseas.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with iOS, QA, and business engineering teams to drive shared Flutter layer optimizations and validate actual performance gains across diverse devices and OS environments.
Key Requirements
Experience: 5+ years of mobile development experience with a strong foundation in native Android, alongside hands-on production experience with Flutter development and performance optimization.
Core Tech Stack: Proficient in Kotlin/Java and Dart, with a deep understanding of Android threading models, Looper/Handler mechanisms, rendering pipelines, memory management, and application lifecycles.
Flutter Internal Mechanics: Solid grasp of the Widget, Element, and RenderObject hierarchy, UI/Raster threads, Event Loops, Isolates, and Platform Channel mechanics.
Profiling & Diagnostics: Proficient with Perfetto, Android Studio Profiler, and Flutter DevTools to analyze thread scheduling, heap dumps, and frame timing metrics.
Track Record: Proven history of successful production performance optimizations, with the ability to clearly articulate problem contexts, diagnostic processes, implemented solutions, quantified gains, and regression validation protocols.
Cross-Layer Debugging: Strong capability to determine whether bottlenecks originate from Dart, Flutter rendering, native modules, 3rd-party SDKs, or OS resource constraints.
Execution & Ownership: Strong focus on code quality and production stability, with the ability to scope refactoring safely within a mature codebase and independently drive issues to complete resolution.
Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have)
Experience adapting and optimizing applications for overseas low-end Android devices, Android Go, or customized OEM ROMs/OS.
Hands-on optimization experience in high-demand scenarios such as audio/video, real-time communication (RTC), complex animations, or high-frequency image loading.
Familiarity with JNI, C/C++, Flutter Engine internals, Impeller, or graphics rendering technologies.
Experience building APM/performance monitoring systems, device tiering strategies, automated performance testing, or production gray-rollout verifications.
Remarks: This role is currently on a hybrid arrangement. However, employees may be required to return to the office on a full on-site basis in the future, subject to company policy.
