Android Software Engineer, Lyft Urban Solutions
Summary
The Android Software Engineer will build and maintain rider-facing features for Lyft's bike and scooter-sharing platforms using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose. This role is based in Montreal and requires working from the office at least three days per week.
At Lyft, our purpose is to serve and connect. We aim to achieve this by cultivating a work environment where all team members belong and have the opportunity to thrive.
Lyft Urban Solutions powers the bike-sharing and scooter-sharing systems that move millions of people in over 60 cities worldwide. We built North America's first automated bike-share system and continue to lead the micromobility revolution. Our systems operate globally - from Citi Bike in New York to BIXI in Montreal, Divvy in Chicago, Capital Bikeshare in DC, and iconic systems in Austin, Barcelona, Bogota, Boston, Buenos Aires, Columbus, Detroit, Dubai, London, Madrid, Mexico City, Monaco, Pittsburgh, Portland, Rio de Janeiro, San Francisco, Toronto, and beyond.
We're not just technology providers - we operate these systems, building the software, hardware, and operations that make urban micromobility work at scale.
Ready to shape how millions of people move through their cities every day?
We're looking for an Android Software Engineer to join the Rider Experience team within Lyft Urban Solutions. Your work will directly power the digital experiences behind our bike-share and scooter-share platforms. You'll build the backend systems that make membership programs, rider features, and real-time experiences feel seamless and fast. We're moving quickly on this hire; the team has ambitious goals for 2026 and needs strong engineers who are ready to ship.
Our engineers are sharp, pragmatic problem-solvers who move fast and deploy to production continuously.
Responsibilities:

- Design, develop, deploy, monitor, operate, and maintain elements of our Rider experience, owning components end to end
- Write reliable, performant, and maintainable code, with comprehensive test coverage
- Reduce technical debt and contribute to ongoing improvements in tooling and code structure
- Analyze internal systems and processes to identify opportunities for improvement and automation
- Participate in code reviews to uphold code quality and share knowledge across the team
- Produce technical specs, runbooks, and documentation covering requirements, security, and privacy
- Share knowledge and support team growth through onboarding materials, brown bags, tech talks, and engineering best practices
- Operations & Quality
- Rotate on-call, monitoring deployed code for stability and performance, proactively fixing bugs, and keeping dashboards and alerts up to date
- Support and escalate production incidents as needed, and contribute improvements to on-call practices and long-term reliability
- Technical Collaboration
- Partner closely with product, data science, analytics, and operations teams to move fast without breaking things
- Communicate technical trade-offs clearly, to engineers and non-engineers alike
- Participate in code reviews and technical discussions
- Partner with product, design, TPM, QA, and other cross-functional teams where applicable
Experience:
- Technical Foundation
- BS/MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- Minimum 1 - 3 years of software engineering industry experience
- Experience with Kotlin
- Experience with Jetpack Compose, declarative UI development, and creating shared components
- Ways of Working
- You thrive in a low-ego, highly collaborative, cross-functional environment
- You can articulate the reasoning behind technical decisions, not just the decisions themselves
- Bonus: you pursue side projects or contribute to open source; curiosity and initiative matter here

- Extended health and dental coverage options, along with life insurance and disability benefits
- Mental health benefits
- Family building benefits
- Pet benefits
- Access to a Lyft funded Health Care Savings Account
- RRSP plan with company match to help save for your future

- Lyft is proud to support new parents with 18 weeks of paid time off, designed as a top-up plan to complement provincial programs. Biological, adoptive, and foster parents are all eligible.
- Subsidized commuter benefits and Lyft ride credits
