HDR is seeking an Assistant Design Manager to join our Resources Business Group within the Waste Sector. This position supports the planning, permitting, design, procurement, and construction of solid waste and resource recovery facilities throughout North America.

Typical projects include transfer stations, material recovery facilities (MRFs), household hazardous waste collection facilities, operations and maintenance buildings, fleet maintenance facilities, hauling facilities, and related waste infrastructure. The successful candidate will support multidisciplinary project teams throughout all phases of project delivery and assist with technical coordination, project management, and client service activities.

Primary Responsibilities

In the role of Assistant Design Manager - Waste Facilities, we'll count on you to\:

• Support multidisciplinary teams through project planning, feasibility studies, facility assessments, conceptual programming, design development, procurement, construction administration, and project closeout.
• Assist with facility planning, site master planning, operational assessments, workflow analysis, and conceptual facility layouts.
• Participate in site visits, existing facility assessments, and field investigations to document existing conditions and identify operational improvement opportunities.
• Support preparation of technical reports, planning studies, design criteria documents, specifications, permit applications, and construction documents.
• Assist with environmental permitting efforts and coordination with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
• Coordinate project tasks among civil, structural, architectural, environmental, mechanical, electrical, and operational team members.
• Support project scheduling, budget tracking, workload planning, and deliverable coordination.
• Maintain project records, meeting notes, action item logs, and document control systems.
• Support project quality assurance and quality control procedures.
• Assist with consultant coordination and review of consultant deliverables.
• Support development of Requests for Proposals (RFPs), procurement documents, grant applications, and operational planning documents.
• Assist with consultant agreement reviews and construction contract reviews.
• Participate in proposal development, scope preparation, fee estimates, and marketing pursuits.
• Support bid-phase and construction administration activities, including submittal reviews, RFIs, shop drawings, and field observations.
• Develop and maintain positive working relationships with clients, stakeholders, contractors, and regulatory agencies.
• Perform other duties as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with solid waste, recycling, industrial, municipal, transportation, or maintenance facility projects.
• Familiarity with environmental permitting and regulatory requirements.
• Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam Revu, and Procore.
• Experience preparing technical reports, facility assessments, grant applications, or proposals.
• Site civil engineering, structural engineering, architecture, environmental engineering, or related technical background
• Understanding of planning, design, permitting, procurement, and construction phases of project delivery.
• Strong organizational, document management, and project coordination skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple assignments and priorities simultaneously.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Ability to travel for project and client needs.
