Backend Engineer - FinTech (M/F/D)

Summary

Build and maintain backend services for payment processing and financial transparency in a mobility platform, using Java/Kotlin, Spring Boot, and AWS.

Freenow empowers smarter mobility decisions helping people to move freely and cities to thrive.

This is an exciting time to join us: Freenow is now part of Lyft, and we're growing our tech organization as we integrate with Lyft's global platform and systems. That means more scale, more engineering depth to learn from, and more opportunity to shape how our systems evolve as we bring the two worlds together.

We are keen to hire a Backend Engineer for our FinTech Team - building the systems for controlled and transparent money flows - both for our mobility customers and our mobility providers.

Our work offers our customers a tailor made and convenient payment experience while creating transparency with our partners about their financials, building our most important value with them: Trust.

Be ready to work in a multinational, diverse, highly motivated and collaborative team of passionate developers who strive for excellence and like to have fun. Are you ready for your next ride?

YOUR DAILY ADVENTURES WILL INCLUDE:

  • Own features end-to-end - from design and coding through testing, deployment and monitoring - with increasing independence and less need for close guidance
  • Design and build microservices and APIs that are clean, well-documented and easy for other teams to consume
  • Take part in code reviews as a reviewer as well as an author, helping raise the bar on quality across the codebase
  • Proactively spot edge cases, gaps in test coverage, and technical debt, and help address them before they become problems
  • Collaborate with your team members in an agile environment, contribute to and help improve our agile ceremonies
  • Support monitoring, alerting and incident response for the services your team owns
  • Help ramp up and support junior colleagues on the team
  • Stay on top of the latest technology trends and apply best practices to our daily work
  • Solve real problems that impact real users

We have around 0.5 million users accessing our product monthly, this is across all European countries that we operate in.

When offering and monetizing reliable, easy-to-use and innovative mobility services to them, the FinTech scalability and reliability are core contributors for the business success, with the ability to adjust and fit different market requirements.

While being both enabler and driver for diverse business initiatives, it's important especially for financial services to stay compliant with regulations.

Be part of our teams, bring in your ideas and evolve with us a high quality software system that makes it easy to stay compliant and boost our business at the same time.

Our Techstack: Java | Kotlin | AWS | Docker | Git | Kafka | ElasticSearch & more

TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS ROLE:

  • 3-5 years of software engineering experience working with Kotlin or Java in production systems
  • While we typically look for candidates with advanced university degrees in Maths, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, or other quantitative disciplines, we're happy for you to prove us wrong and show that these degrees aren't necessary
  • Comfortable designing RESTful APIs (filtering, versioning, pagination) and reasoning about event-driven architectures, transactions and resiliency
  • Solid, idiomatic experience with Spring (Boot) or a similar JVM framework, and a good understanding of relational databases and JPA/ORM patterns - not just how to use them, but why
  • Comfortable working independently through ambiguous requirements, and confident debugging unfamiliar parts of a large codebase
  • Strong testing habits across the software lifecycle (unit / integration / system), with an eye for edge cases and failure modes
  • Able to communicate technical topics clearly to different audiences, including non-technical stakeholders, and to explain the reasoning behind your technical decisions
  • Comfortable using AI coding assistants as part of your day-to-day workflow, while staying accountable for the quality and correctness of what ships
  • Comfortable contributing to on-call rotations and incident resolution
  • Preferably knowledge of financial systems like invoicing and payouts
