Backend Engineer
Summary
Builds and maintains server-side services and RESTful APIs for an enterprise tech platform, covering data modeling, API design, testing, and deployment, while using Git and AI coding tools. 100% remote with flexible hours; Ruby on Rails/Node.js/NestJS experience is a plus.
Join our team as a Backend Engineer building an Enterprise Tech platform. You will be part of a talented team that works on impactful enterprise-level applications. Backend Engineer roles and responsibilities include contributing to server-side application development, while providing expertise in the full software development lifecycle, from data modeling and API design to testing and deployment.
Key responsibilities
Produce fully functional programs writing clean, testable code — and be able to walk through the trade-offs and reasoning behind how you built it
Plan and design backend solutions (data models, APIs, integrations), weigh trade-offs such as cost, complexity, reliability, and scale, and write down the reasoning behind your choices
Use AI tools to speed up parts of your workflow, and review AI-generated or teammates' code critically before it ships
Diagnose bugs and bottlenecks in existing systems, not just patch symptoms
Build and maintain backend services and RESTful APIs
Understand the product and the client's business behind each task, and speak up when a requirement doesn't make sense for users
Proactively communicate with the counterpart and internal team about project requirements, coordination, and task progression
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
Grit to learn and adapt: Problem-solving and resourcefulness — able to figure things out and adjust your approach when the default one doesn't fit
Humility to accept and give constructive, critical feedback, and follow through on it
Proficient verbal and written English
Strong working knowledge of Git — you use it to organize and document your own work
Experience using AI coding tools, with the transparency and accountability to own what you ship regardless of AI's role in producing it
Curiosity about the product and the client's business behind your tasks
Nice-to-haves
Experience with Ruby on Rails / Node.js / NestJS
Experience with testing, background jobs, or deployment
Comfortable with UNIX/Linux environment
Knowledge of MVC architecture and OO design patterns
Hands-on experience developing and launching software applications
