Backend Machine Learning Programmer

Summary

Builds cloud-native backend services and data pipelines for AI-powered coding tools and game AI at a global game-services company, deploying ML models on AWS.

Responsibilities

We are looking for a Backend Machine Learning Programmer to build the scalable services and data infrastructure that power our AI products. You will design cloud-native systems on AWS, build large-scale data pipelines, and deploy and serve machine-learning models in production. You will join the team advancing AI-assisted coding and agentic approaches across Virtuos – creating AI agents and solutions that make our developers more productive – alongside our work on real-time AI, game AI, and quality-engineering agents. This is a global Virtuos role; being based in our Kuala Lumpur office is a plus but not required. On-site presence is expected at the start, and a hybrid arrangement (three days in the office, two days from home) can be agreed after an initial on-site period. A fully remote arrangement is not offered for this role. We are happy to discuss individual circumstances and reasonable accommodations within this arrangement.

  • Design and build scalable backend services and APIs for machine‑learning and AI features.
  • Build and operate large‑scale data pipelines for ingesting, processing and storing big datasets.
  • Deploy, serve and scale machine‑learning models in production, including inference, embeddings and vector search.
  • Design and operate cloud infrastructure on AWS, ensuring reliability, security and cost‑efficiency.
  • Own data storage and retrieval across relational and vector/search stores.
  • Build CI/CD, observability and automated testing for backend systems.
  • Collaborate with machine‑learning and frontend engineers to deliver features end to end.

Qualifications

  • Strong backend engineering skills in Python (or another server‑side language).
  • Hands‑on experience with AWS cloud services (compute, storage, containers and serverless).
  • Experience with big‑data and distributed‑data processing at scale.
  • Experience serving machine‑learning models and working with databases, including vector/search stores.
  • A solid grounding in APIs, microservices, containerization and monitoring.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines – GitLab and Horde are strong pluses; Jenkins and TeamCity a lesser plus.
  • Game development experience is valued.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Around 4+ years of backend engineering experience.
  • Hands‑on experience with AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, Codex CLI, GitHub Copilot or equivalent (required).
