Backend Machine Learning Programmer

Summary

Builds cloud-native backend services and data pipelines to deploy and serve AI models for coding assistants and game AI at a global game-dev studio.

Position Overview

We are looking for a Backend Machine Learning Programmer to build the scalable services and data infrastructure that power our AI products. You will design cloud‑native systems on AWS, build large‑scale data pipelines, and deploy and serve machine‑learning models in production. You will join the team advancing AI‑assisted coding and agentic approaches across Virtuos—creating AI agents and solutions that make our developers more productive—alongside our work, to a smaller degree, on real‑time AI, game AI, and quality‑engineering agents. This is a global Virtuos role. Being based in our Kuala Lumpur office is a plus but not required. On‑site presence is expected at the start, and a hybrid arrangement (three days in the office, two days from home) can be agreed after an initial on‑site period. A fully remote arrangement is not offered for this role. We’re happy to discuss individual circumstances and reasonable accommodations within this arrangement.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build scalable backend services and APIs for machine‑learning and AI features.
  • Build and operate large‑scale data pipelines for ingesting, processing and storing big datasets.
  • Deploy, serve and scale machine‑learning models in production, including inference, embeddings and vector search.
  • Design and operate cloud infrastructure on AWS, ensuring reliability, security and cost‑efficiency.
  • Own data storage and retrieval across relational and vector/search stores.
  • Build CI/CD, observability and automated testing for backend systems.
  • Collaborate with machine‑learning and frontend engineers to deliver features end to end.

Qualifications

  • Strong backend engineering skills in Python (and/or another server‑side language).
  • Hands‑on experience with AWS cloud services (compute, storage, containers and serverless).
  • Experience with big‑data and distributed‑data processing at scale.
  • Experience serving machine‑learning models and working with databases, including vector/search stores.
  • A solid grounding in APIs, microservices, containerization and monitoring.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines – GitLab and Horde are a strong plus; Jenkins and TeamCity a lesser plus.
  • Game development experience is valued.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Around 4+ years of backend engineering experience.
  • Hands‑on experience with AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, Codex CLI, GitHub Copilot or equivalent (required).
