Job Summary
Debra-Kuempel is seeking to fill a Building Automation Systems (BAS) Design Engineer position. This individual will be responsible for designing systems architecture, setting installation plans, and setting pacing at the beginning of a project. This individual will also be responsible for designing automatic temperature control and energy management systems, which includes producing control schematics, wiring diagrams, setting sequences of operation, programming, and billing material lists based upon customer needs and/or project plans and specifications.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Design and develop BAS, including DDC controls, using advanced engineering principles and industry standards.
- Exercise independent judgment in system design, control strategies, and engineering solutions to meet project and compliance requirements.
- Interpret construction documents to produce control system designs, submittals, and system architectures.
- Develop and program control logic and integrate third-party systems (e.g., BACnet, Modbus).
- Serve as technical lead for assigned projects, responsible for key engineering decisions and system functionality.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment of design intent and execution.
- Identify project risks, gaps, and ambiguities; develop solutions and initiate RFIs.
- Review and validate engineering deliverables (schematics, layouts, sequences) for accuracy and quality.
- Provide technical leadership during commissioning to ensure systems meet design intent.
- Recommend design improvements to optimize system performance and reliability.
- Select and specify control components and maintain accurate project documentation.
- Provide subject matter expertise and escalate complex issues with recommended solutions.
- Perform other duties consistent with the scope of the role.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Controls Engineering
- Extensive combination of technical training and 2+ years of BAS/DDC or PLC experience may be considered in lieu of a formal educational degree.
- 5 years' experience designing, programming, or engineering automation/control systems.
- Experience using Automated Logic Corp (ALC) products is strongly preferred but not required.
- Ability to apply advanced engineering principles and control theory to system design.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC, electrical systems, and BAS architecture.
- Proficiency with schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel design.
- Experience with BACnet, Modbus, or similar protocols.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, Visio, Microsoft Office, and BAS-related networking.
- Ability to interpret construction documents and engineering standards.
- Exercises independent judgment and discretion in technical problem-solving.

The noise level in the field work environment is usually moderate to loud.

Employees covered by a collective bargaining agreement will receive benefits as negotiated within their specific CBA and may be eligible to participate in our voluntary supplemental union benefits program. We anticipate a base salary in the range of $75,000-$110,000, with final compensation determined by factors such as experience, skills, education, and market conditions.
