At Community Care Ambulance, the Captain is a key operational leadership role responsible for the direct oversight of daily field operations. This position ensures safe, efficient, and compliant EMS system performance while supporting high-quality patient care across all field units.

The Captain serves as the frontline operational leader, mentor, and liaison between field personnel, Communications, and organizational leadership. This role is essential in maintaining system readiness, guiding personnel performance, and ensuring that patient care, safety, and operational efficiency remain the highest priorities throughout every shift.

A key component of this position is leadership development. Each Captain is responsible for mentoring and coaching assigned Lieutenants, helping them develop the leadership skills necessary for future advancement into Captain and other operational leadership positions. This structured development model strengthens succession planning and builds long-term leadership capacity within the organization.

Community Care Ambulance is a non-profit, full-service EMS organization serving Northeast Ohio with a commitment to high-quality, patient-centered care. We provide 911 emergency response, interfacility transport, emergency communications, and disaster deployment services across the region.


Captain – Duties & Responsibilities

(The duties listed are not all-inclusive but represent the essential functions of the role.)

Operational Leadership

  • Directly supervise and oversee all field operations during assigned shifts.
  • Ensure staffing levels, unit deployment, and operational activities meet organizational and regulatory standards.
  • Monitor system status and coordinate with Communications and Operations to ensure efficient resource allocation.
  • Maintain operational readiness, including vehicle status, equipment availability, and personnel preparedness.
  • Respond to system demands and provide real-time decision-making and problem-solving support.
  • Ensure compliance with clinical protocols, company policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide direct patient care when operational needs require field support.
  • Serve as the senior field leader during emergency incidents, multi-unit responses, and large-scale operational events.
  • Support organizational initiatives while maintaining a visible leadership presence in the field.

Interdepartmental Collaboration

  • Maintain strong working relationships with Communications, Operations, Clinical Services, Fleet, Human Resources, and Administrative departments.
  • Coordinate closely with Dispatch to ensure effective system-wide communication and resource management.
  • Promote teamwork, professionalism, and operational consistency across all departments.
  • Support continuous quality improvement initiatives and operational enhancements.
  • Collaborate with leadership to identify opportunities for improving system performance and employee engagement.

Workforce Development & Supervision

  • Supervise, evaluate, and support field personnel performance during assigned shifts.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and leadership development to employees.
  • Actively mentor assigned Lieutenants, preparing them for future advancement into Captain and higher levels of operational leadership.
  • Conduct regular field observations and provide constructive feedback to improve clinical and operational performance.
  • Deliver coaching, counseling, and corrective action in accordance with company policy.
  • Support onboarding, orientation, and successful integration of new employees.
  • Participate in interviews, hiring, promotional processes, and leadership selection activities as assigned.
  • Assist in identifying future leaders through mentoring and performance development.
  • Promote accountability, professionalism, employee engagement, and a positive team culture.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Conduct field observations and patient care evaluations to ensure quality assurance and regulatory compliance.
  • Monitor and maintain accountability of vehicles, equipment, medications, and operational resources.
  • Investigate employee concerns, patient complaints, accidents, injuries, safety events, and near misses while ensuring timely documentation and follow-up.
  • Coordinate with Fleet, Logistics, Clinical Services, and other support departments regarding operational needs.
  • Review and reconcile employee timecards for accuracy and completeness.
  • Complete daily operational reports, incident documentation, and leadership reports.
  • Ensure inventory accountability and medication compliance in accordance with company policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely documentation for all assigned responsibilities.

  • Lead by example while demonstrating integrity, accountability, professionalism, and respect.
  • Maintain confidentiality and ethical conduct at all times.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment and effective decision-making in high-pressure situations.
  • Maintain all required certifications, licensure, and continuing education requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current Ohio Paramedic certification (or ability to obtain before start date)
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
  • Minimum experience requirements as established by Community Care Ambulance leadership
  • Demonstrated leadership experience within an EMS or public safety environment preferred
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, conflict resolution, and organizational skills
  • Ability to make sound operational decisions in fast-paced, dynamic environments
  • Ability to lead, motivate, mentor, and develop employees
  • Proficiency with EMS documentation systems, scheduling software, and Microsoft Office applications
