Chief Accounting Officer
The Chief Accounting Officer (CAO) is a senior executive responsible for leading the organization’s accounting strategy, governance, and operations. This role provides enterprise-wide leadership for accounting policies, financial reporting integrity, regulatory compliance, and the ongoing improvement of accounting systems and internal controls.
What You’ll Do
Strategic Leadership & Governance
- Develops and leads the organization’s accounting strategic plan, ensuring alignment with overall business objectives and enterprise strategy.
- Establishes and implements accounting policies, procedures, and governance frameworks to support accurate, timely, and compliant financial reporting.
- Serves as the principal accounting advisor to executive leadership and business unit leaders on complex accounting matters and strategic initiatives.
- Regulatory Compliance & Standards
- Monitors, interprets, and advises leadership on current and emerging accounting regulations and standards, including GAAP, IFRS, FASB updates, and governmental financial and tax regulations.
- Leads organizational readiness for regulatory changes by assessing impacts, developing implementation plans, and ensuring consistent execution across the enterprise.
- Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local financial reporting and tax requirements.
Accounting Operations & Systems
- Designs, implements, and oversees accounting systems, processes, and internal controls to ensure financial integrity, transparency, and audit readiness.
- Operationalizes accounting and auditing systems to enable continuous monitoring, risk mitigation, and process improvement.
- Oversees enterprise accounting functions, which may include general ledger, financial reporting, tax, fixed assets, revenue recognition, and internal controls.
Audit & Risk Management
- Provides executive oversight of internal and external audit activities, ensuring timely resolution of findings and continuous strengthening of control environments.
- Partners with external auditors and regulatory bodies as the organization’s senior accounting authority.
People Leadership & Talent Development
- Builds and maintains deep accounting expertise across the organization through structured training, professional development, and succession planning.
- Develops a high‑performing accounting leadership team and fosters a culture of accountability, continuous learning, and ethical financial stewardship.
Executive Impact
- Participates in enterprise‑level decision‑making as a Vice President, contributing to strategic initiatives with significant organizational impact.
- Communicates complex accounting and financial matters clearly to executive leadership and key stakeholders.
- Additional duties as required or assigned.
What We’re Looking For
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting standards, and internal control frameworks.
- Proven leadership ability with experience managing accounting teams and overseeing complex financial operations.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively engage with executive leadership, auditors, and cross-functional teams.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret financial data and support strategic decision-making.
- Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and maintain financial policies, procedures, and reporting structures.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA or equivalent designation preferred.
- Extensive progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibility within a complex organization.
- Experience in financial reporting, audit coordination, and internal controls strongly preferred.
- Prior experience in a senior accounting leadership role (or equivalent) required.
