Chief of Staff
About the Role
We're looking for an exceptional Chief of Staff (with the potential to grow into a VP/SVP role in 1-2 years) to work directly with our COO and founders as we scale Bolto into the default operating system for global employment.
This is not a strategy-only role. You'll be dropped into the company's highest-priority operational problems, often with little context, no existing playbook, and an expectation that you'll figure it out.
One week you might be researching compliance requirements at a state level and designing a product rollout with engineering. The next, you could be untangling a complex customer issue that requires coordinating across payroll, engineering, and support. The week after that, you may own implementation of a new internal system, build an operational process from scratch, or lead a cross-functional initiative that simply needs someone to make it happen.
You'll work side-by-side with our COO and founders, acting as a force multiplier for the executive team. Your job is to take ambiguous, high-impact problems and drive them to completion with minimal oversight.
What You'll Do
- Become the internal expert on whatever the company needs most that week.
- Own critical cross-functional projects from idea through execution.
- Investigate operational, product, and customer problems where there is no obvious answer.
- Design and implement scalable internal processes.
- Coordinate across engineering, product, payroll, operations, and customer success.
- Create order out of chaos while maintaining an exceptionally high bar for execution.
What You'll Get
- A high impact role that works hand in hand with the Senior Leadership Team to extinguish the most pressing fires across the company.
- Exposure to all facets of the business, from product & engineering heavy projects, to sales and marketing pushes that require your entire focus.
- A direct pathway to graduate into a VP/SVP role over an entire vertical in the company after 1-2 years
- Meaningful equity in an early-stage post-PMF company
Who Excites Us
- Former investment bankers who want to own more creative and diverse workstreams.
- Consultants with 1-2 years under their belt who realized the startup world is far more enticing than big consulting firms.
- Ops and strategy folks who have already thrived at growing startups and understand what it means to go from 0→1.
- Competitive debaters, former math olympiad competitors, mock trial enthusiasts, and passionate academic hobbiests!
What We're Looking For
- Outstanding executive function and organizational ability. You don't wait to be told exactly what to do.
- Strong analytical and research skills. You enjoy becoming an expert in unfamiliar topics quickly.
- Obsession with detail while never losing sight of the bigger picture.
- A builder's mindset. You enjoy creating systems that make organizations better.
You'll Thrive Here If...
- You like solving problems you've never seen before.
- You'd rather own outcomes than follow instructions.
- You want unusually broad exposure to how a high-growth startup is built.
- You care about speed, but never at the expense of quality.
Career Growth
We view this as one of the best training grounds for future operators. You'll gain exposure to nearly every function of the business, work directly with the founders on the company's highest-priority initiatives, and develop the judgment needed to lead teams and own major business functions. Our hope is that exceptional people who excel in this role grow into long-term leaders at Bolto as the company scales.
A note from one of the Co-Founders:
“I met Mern as a freshman at Dartmouth college nearly a decade ago. We bonded quickly over a deep love of sports and academia. While most of our initial days started to watch the 2017 MLB playoffs, we found our shared love of philosophy and building to be quite compatible. After quick stints on opposite coasts working in big tech and investment banking, we paired back up to take a shot at building something together. That’s when Bolto was born.
Over the years, we have assembled a team of some of the smartest minds that we’ve ever worked with. And we are all motivated by a shared love of competing. Bolto is a place for people who are looking to “swing the bat”, which we often say internally. By this, we mean people who are highly motivated to put their best foot forward. People who are constantly coming up with good ideas that can set Bolto apart. That’s why we have a horizontal org structure at Bolto. We truly believe that any and every team member can be the person to step up and make a difference.
If this sounds like a team you’d like to join, we’re excited to read your application.”
