Data Analyst

About the role:

A NSW Government department is seeking a Data Analyst to support the development of a new Data Strategy and Data Governance Frameworks. You will work closely with key stakeholders across the department and confidently bridge the gap between business requirements, strategy, and data in a government environment.
  • Hourly rate: $50-$55 + Super an hour
  • Sydney, Parramatta location
  • 3 days remote working a week
  • Immediate start
  • Temporary until January, 2027 - Full-time
Key Responsibilities:
  • Support the development of the department's Data Strategy through research, analysis, and strategic documentation
  • Assist in developing the Data Governance Framework, including policies, standards, metadata, and data ownership
  • Ensure alignment with NSW Government data, digital, and compliance frameworks
  • Engage with business units, IT teams, and stakeholders to gather requirements and develop strategic recommendations
  • Prepare briefing papers, presentations, reports, and supporting materials for senior executives
  • Support system and data landscape mapping, identifying gaps and opportunities for improvement
  • Work closely with the Data Strategy Lead to deliver strategic data initiatives and provide recommendations aligned with government best practice
To be successful:
  • Previous experience working in a government or public sector environment
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills, with the ability to work across business and technical teams
  • Experience contributing to data strategy, data governance, business analysis, or digital transformation initiatives
  • Understanding of government data governance, compliance frameworks, and policy environments
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing executive briefings and presentations.
  • Ability to work autonomously, interpret policies and frameworks, and provide strategic recommendations with minimal direction
  • Technical data experience (such as SQL, Power BI, Python, or similar) is advantageous, although the initial focus of the role will be strategy and governance rather than hands-on data analysis
  • Experience with data systems or digital transformation projects will be highly regarded
