JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking a hands-on Data Engineer to manage, operate, extend and improve its Microsoft Fabric data warehouse environment.

The role is responsible for the end-to-end Fabric data platform, including source ingestion, metadata management, pipeline orchestration, Lakehouse layers, EDW warehouse objects, reconciliation, data quality, semantic model enablement and operational support.

This is not a dashboard-only role. The role requires someone who can work across Microsoft Fabric, SQL, pipelines, notebooks, metadata-driven architecture, dimensional modelling and Power BI semantic models to maintain a reliable, governed and scalable data foundation.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Fabric data warehouse operation

  • Operate and maintain Microsoft Fabric data warehouse across Landing, Bronze, Silver and Gold layers.

  • Monitor and support Fabric pipelines, notebooks, ControlDB metadata, execution logs, alerts and reconciliation processes.

  • Investigate and resolve pipeline failures, load issues, refresh failures, data quality problems and reconciliation variances.

  • Maintain environment configuration across Dev and Production, including variable libraries, workspace settings, deployment rules and data connections.

  • Support operational maintenance including Delta table optimisation, vacuuming, log review, watermark management and scheduled refresh checks.

Data source onboarding and pipeline development

  • Bring new data sources into the Fabric platform using the established metadata-driven framework.

  • Configure source-to-landing, landing-to-bronze, bronze-to-silver and silver-to-gold metadata records.

  • Support ingestion from SQL, OData, REST API, CRM/Dataverse, Excel and other business data sources as required.

  • Configure incremental and full-load patterns, API pagination, dependency order and source-specific transformation requirements.

  • Establish and maintain pipeline pass-through from source systems through to the EDW and downstream semantic models.

Metadata and transformation management

  • Create and maintain metadata in Control DB tables, including source extraction, landing-to-bronze, bronze-to-silver, column mappings, silver-to-gold, alerts and reconciliation mappings.

  • Maintain column-level transformation rules, data type conversion, trimming, default values, data quality rules and source-to-target mappings.

  • Manage schema evolution when new fields or source changes are introduced.

  • Ensure metadata settings are accurate, documented and safe to promote between environments.

EDW and dimensional modelling

  • Build, maintain and improve Gold-layer EDW objects, including facts, dimensions, reference tables, views and stored procedures.

  • Apply dimensional modelling principles, including star schema design, surrogate keys, natural keys, SCD Type 1 and SCD Type 2 logic.

  • Develop and maintain business logic used to populate EDW tables from Silver-layer data.

  • Validate relationships between facts, dimensions and bridge tables to ensure reporting outputs aggregate correctly.

  • Support reconciliation between source, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Power BI outputs.

Semantic model and reporting support

  • Build and maintain Power BI semantic models on top of EDW views and tables.

  • Create reliable relationships, measures, calculation logic, date relationships, display folders and model structures.

  • Support Direct Lake, Direct Query or Import Mode models where required.

  • Implement row-level security, object-level security or model-level access controls where required.

  • Work with business users to validate metric definitions, reporting logic and data outputs.

Governance, security and DevOps

  • Follow Fabric security model, including Microsoft Entra ID groups, workspace roles, service principals and controlled access to data assets.

  • Maintain secure handling of credentials through Azure Key Vault and approved Fabric connections.

  • Support CI/CD processes through Fabric Deployment Pipelines and Azure DevOps Git integration.

  • Document changes, support pull requests, and ensure Dev and Production remain aligned.

  • Maintain technical documentation for data sources, metadata, pipelines, EDW objects, semantic models and operational procedures.

Essential skills and experience

  • Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Factory-style pipelines, Lakehouse, Warehouse, notebooks and Power BI.

  • Strong SQL skills, including stored procedures, views, joins, reconciliation queries, dimensional modelling and performance troubleshooting.

  • Experience developing metadata-driven data pipelines or configuration-driven ETL/ELT frameworks.

  • Experience with medallion architecture, including Landing, Bronze, Silver and Gold data layers.

  • Strong understanding of data warehouse design, star schemas, facts, dimensions, surrogate keys and slowly changing dimensions.

  • Experience with incremental loads, watermarks, schema evolution, deduplication, upserts and data quality checks.

  • Strong Power BI semantic modelling skills, including relationships, DAX measures, aggregations and model performance.

  • Ability to debug data issues from source system through to report output.

  • Strong documentation discipline and ability to work from runbooks, architecture documents and operational procedures.

REQUIREMENTS

Desirable skills and experience

  • Experience with HubSpot, Premier Construction Software, OData, REST APIs, Dataverse, Excel-based ingestion or SharePoint-based data sources.

  • Experience with Azure DevOps Git, Fabric Deployment Pipelines and environment promotion.

  • Experience managing Fabric capacity, workspace access, service principals, Key Vault and data connection security.

  • Exposure to construction, finance, operations, project, sales, CRM or ERP datasets.

  • Experience working in environments where source systems are evolving and data quality is not always clean.

Success profile

The right person will be practical, technically strong and comfortable owning the data platform end to end. They will be able to:

  • Work independently with limited supervision.
  • Understand business reporting requirements and translate them into reliable data structures.
  • Investigate data problems deeply, not just patch the report layer.
  • Maintain the platform safely across Dev and Production.
  • Add new sources and fields using the established metadata-driven approach.
  • Keep documentation current enough for the platform to be supportable.
  • Prioritise accuracy, reconciliation, repeatability and governed reporting over quick dashboard fixes.
