Tonkin + Taylor is New Zealand's leading engineering and environmental consultancy, renowned for our technical excellence in solving complex challenges. We are proudly a New Zealand, employee-owned company and our collective mission is to create and sustain a better world.

Mō te tūranga / The opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Data Platform & Analytics Engineer to develop and continually improve our Databricks Enterprise data platform. Working within the Business Intelligence team, you will engineer robust, scalable and well-governed data transformation pipelines using Databricks and dbt, delivering trusted datasets for reporting, analytics and operational decision-making.

This is an engineering-focused role, with occasional support for reporting and insights development where required. You will work closely with BI Developers, Data Analysts and Technology teams to establish engineering standards and best practices that enable our analytical capability to scale sustainably.

Success in this role will be measured through the quality, reliability, maintainability and performance of the data models, transformation pipelines and reporting datasets delivered into the Databricks platform and Power BI environment.

Kei te hiahia mātou ki ōu | What you'll be doing

  • Develop and maintain data transformation pipelines using dbt within Databricks.
  • Build, optimise and support enterprise data models based on dimensional modelling best practices.
  • Design and implement scalable ELT solutions using the Databricks Medallion Architecture (Bronze, Silver and Gold).
  • Develop reusable, well-tested and documented transformation logic.
  • Optimise advanced SQL transformations for performance, scalability and maintainability.
  • Implement incremental processing strategies and optimise Delta Lake performance.
  • Build trusted dimensional models, including fact tables and dimension tables.
  • Integrate data from multiple operational systems into a governed enterprise data warehouse.
  • Support the ongoing development of the enterprise semantic data layer.
  • Ensure datasets are accurate, complete and aligned with business requirements.
  • Develop reconciliation and validation processes to verify transformed data against source systems.
  • Implement automated testing using dbt tests and other data quality frameworks.
  • Investigate and resolve data quality issues and transformation failures.
  • Monitor data pipeline performance and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Work alongside BI Developers to provide analytics-ready datasets for reporting.
  • Assist with migrating existing Power BI transformation logic into Databricks.
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to engineering standards and reusable patterns.
  • Produce clear technical documentation for data models, transformation logic and engineering processes.
  • Provide technical advice on data modelling, transformation approaches and technical options.
  • Share knowledge and support colleagues through documentation, reusable solutions and informal mentoring.

Nā tōu rourou / What you’ll bring

You will be an experienced Data Engineer with commercial experience delivering modern data solutions in enterprise or cloud environments. You will bring strong technical capability, sound judgement and a commitment to developing reliable, maintainable and well-governed data products.

  • Strong knowledge of dimensional data modelling, including Kimball methodologies, star schemas, fact tables and dimension tables.
  • Practical understanding of Delta Lake, Medallion Architecture and layered data platforms.
  • Experience working with the Azure Data Platform and modern cloud data warehousing technologies.
  • Proficiency in Python for data engineering and automation.
  • Experience implementing data quality testing, reconciliation, validation and monitoring processes.
  • Experience using Git, CI/CD and version-controlled development practices.
  • An understanding of how to develop trusted, analytics-ready datasets for Power BI and other reporting tools.
  • Ability to work independently under broad direction and exercise sound technical judgement.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and technical communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to delivering reliable, tested, maintainable and well-documented solutions.
