About Us:
DEFENHEALTH NZ LIMITED, operating as Defen Digital, is an Auckland-based business technology solutions provider established in 2016. We partner with New Zealand businesses to solve operational bottlenecks by designing, developing, and integrating the systems behind sales, orders, customers, and everyday operations. Our core work involves full-stack development, system integration, and workflow automation — connecting POS, CRM, inventory, and online commerce platforms so that data flows reliably across a client's business. We help organisations move from a business idea or a disconnected process to a working, connected system.
About the Role:
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Database Administrator to design, manage, and optimise the database systems that underpin our client projects and internal platforms. In this role, you will work closely with our full-stack developers and solution architects to ensure that data integrity, security, and performance are built into every system we deliver. You will be responsible for database architecture, tuning, backup and recovery, and supporting the connected workflows that our clients rely on for their daily operations.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Database Design & Architecture
1.1 Design and maintain database structures, schemas, and data models that support client-facing business systems, including POS, CRM, order processing, and inventory modules.
1.2 Define data dictionaries, naming conventions, and integrity rules to ensure consistency across integrated systems and client projects.
2. Performance Monitoring & Tuning
2.1 Monitor database performance and optimise query execution, indexing strategies, and system parameters for high-availability and high-transaction environments.
2.2 Diagnose and resolve performance bottlenecks and concurrency issues across production and development databases.
3. Data Integrity & Security
3.1 Implement robust access controls, encryption, and auditing mechanisms to protect sensitive client and business data.
3.2 Enforce data validation and consistency rules in line with New Zealand privacy and data protection standards.
4. Backup, Recovery & High Availability
4.1 Design, schedule, and test automated backup and disaster recovery procedures to minimise data loss and downtime for client systems.
4.2 Configure replication, clustering, and failover strategies where required to maintain business continuity.
5. Collaboration & Client Project Support
5.1 Work alongside full-stack developers, solution architects, and project teams to gather data requirements and recommend appropriate database solutions for each engagement.
5.2 Provide ongoing support for deployed systems, troubleshooting database-related issues and performing root-cause analysis as part of client support and maintenance.
6. Documentation & Automation
6.1 Maintain clear documentation of database configurations, operational procedures, recovery plans, and change histories.
6.2 Develop scripts and automation tools for routine maintenance, performance monitoring, and health checks to improve operational efficiency.
Qualifications & Experience:
1. A Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field.
2. If the above qualification is not met, a minimum of 5 years of proven professional experience as a Database Administrator (or similar role) is required.
3. Solid hands-on experience with relational database management systems (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server) in production environments.
4. Strong knowledge of database design, normalisation, indexing, query optimisation, and performance tuning.
5. Proficiency in backup and recovery techniques, high-availability architectures, and disaster recovery planning.
6. Understanding of security best practices (access control, encryption, auditing) and compliance with NZ privacy regulations.
7. Experience supporting business systems, e-commerce platforms, or integrated operational software is highly desirable.
8. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
9. Strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to manage multiple project tasks simultaneously.
10. Scripting skills (e.g., PowerShell, Python, Bash) for automation tasks are an advantage.
What We Offer:
1. A competitive salary package commensurate with experience.
2. 40 hours per week providing stability and work-life balance.
3. The opportunity to work on diverse client projects, connecting business processes through well-designed database solutions.
4. A collaborative and supportive team environment within a growing New Zealand technology company.
5. Professional development opportunities and the chance to contribute to the evolution of our technical practice.
